described for the] edificacioun of hem the ben of symple understandynge. . . to
the which soules as seint Bernard saith contemplacioun of the manhede of God is
mor lyking more spedeful and more siker than hige contemplacioun of the
godhede. And therfore to hem is
principally to be sette in minde the ymage of Cristes incarnacioun passion and
resurrection. . .so that a symple soul that kan not thenke bot bodies or bodily

From Chapter 4:
And when she had done: şei

not bot toke hire vp & so şei setten downe to gedire. And şan asked oure
lady of Elizabeth şe manere of hire conceyuyng, & she a3eyn of şe maner of
hire conceyuyng, & so şei tolden eipere to oşere gladly şe grete gudenesse
of oure lord, & lowedon & wirchipedon god of eişer conception, & so
in şonkyng god & gostly myrş şei contynueden dayes & ny3tes. For oure
laidy duelled şere şe [terme] of şre moneşes seruyng Elizabeth in al şat she
my3t, mekely, reuerently & deuoutly as a seruant, for3etyng şat she was
goddis modere & qwene of alle şe world. A lord god what house was şat, what
Chaumbur & what bedde in şe whech duelleden to gedire & resteden so
worşi Moderes with so noble sones, şat is to sey Marie & Elizabeth, Jesus
& Jon. And also with hem duellyng şo wirchipful olde men, Zakarie &
Joseph. Şis was a blessed companye of men & women & of children.
In şis forseid processe of şe
visitacione of oure lady we hauen ensaumple şat it is leueful & oft
spedful, deuout men & women to viset oşer for edificacion & gostly
recreacion, & namelich şe 3ongere to şe eldire, so şat it be done in dewe
tyme, & with oşere leueful menes. And also şat şe 3iftes of grace mowen be
notifiede to oşere for edificacion, in tyme so şat it be not done for vayn ioy,
bot [only to] goddus wirchipe. . . .
¶ De natiuitate sancti Jobannis baptiste
Forşermore when şe tyme of
Elizabeth was come she was li3tnet & bare hir child, şe which in token of
his grete holynes, oure lady first lift vp fro şe gronde, & after bisily
di3t & treted as it longet to him. IAnd şe child as vndurstondyng what she
was, sette hees eyene saddely vpon hire, & when she wolde take him to his
modere: he turned his hed & his face to hire, als hauyng in hir al only his
likyng, & she gladly pleide with him, & louely clipped & kissed
him. And here mowe we se şe grete worşines of şis child, for şere was neuer

From Chapter 44:
Oo lord god in what state
was şat tyme his modere soule, when she sawh him so peynfully faile, wepe &
dye? Soşely I trowe şat for şe multitude of anguishes she was alle out of hir
self & vnfelable made as half dede, & şat now mich more şan what tyme
she mette with him, beringe şe crosse as it is seide.
What trowe we didene şen
Maudleyn şe trewe louede disciplesse, what John his awne derlyng, & oşer
tweyn sistres of oure lady? Bot what miht şei do? Şei were alle fulle of sorowe
& bitternes, & şerfore şei weptene sore without remedye.
Loo now hangeş oure lorde on
şe crosse dede, & alle şat grete multitude goşe awey towarde şe cite, &
his sorouful modere with şe foure forseide felawes, sette hir done by side şe
crosse, & beholdeş piteuously hir dere sone so ferd wiş & abideş helpe
fro god, şat she miht haue him to hir & birye him.
Şou also if şou beholde wele
şi lorde şou maiht haue here matire
ynouh of hye compassion, seynge him so tormentede, şat fro şe sole of şe fote
in to şe hiest part of şe hede şer was in him none hole place nor membre
without passion.
Şis is a pitevouse siht
& a joyful siht. A pitevous siht in him for şat harde passion şat he
suffrede for oure sauacion, bot it is a likyng siht to vs, for şe matire &
şe effecte şat we haue şerbye of oure redempcion. Soşely şis siht of oure lord
Jesu hangyng so on şe crosse by deuoute ymaginacion of şe soule, is so likyng
to sume creatours şat after longe exercise of sorouful compassion şei felen sumtyme,
so grete likyng not onely in soule bot also in şe body şat şei kunne not telle,
& şat noman may in siht in knowe, bot onely he şat by experience feleş it.
And şan may he wele sey with şe apostle, Betyde me neuer to be ioyful bot in
şe crosse of my lord Jesu criste. Amen.
