III. One of the following essay questions will appear on the exam (40%):

1. Discuss (compare, contrast, build an argument about) the role that magic plays in Lanval, the Wife of Bath’s Tale, and the Tale of Florent.

2. Discuss (compare, contrast, build an argument about) the role that promises and bargains play in three of the following: Lanval, the Wife of Bath’s Tale, the Tale of Florent, Doctor Faustus.

3. Discuss the theme of loyalty (loyalty to what?) with reference to at least three works we’ve read this semester, from at least two different periods.
