Beginning with the class of 2010, all high school students in Missouri must complete a one-semester personal finance economics course. Our course, Economics 5055: Personal Finance Economics is designed to help classroom teachers prepare to teach the high school course. We have aligned our course with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s competencies for the high school course. This course will address issues in personal finance economics, including ways to enhance earning capacity, the wise use of credit, the development of prudent spending habits, methods of saving, risk management, and money management. We will include content instruction along with strategies, methods, and lessons for teaching the content in the high school classroom.

Course objectives

1. to develop an awareness and understanding of basic concepts in personal finance
2. to enhance the ability to reach personal financial goals
3. to present activity ideas for teaching basic personal finance concepts in high school
4. to present supplementary materials to reinforce economic concepts
5. to develop a positive attitude about teaching personal finance economics

This is a graduate-level, three-credit-hour course. Missouri teachers are eligible to receive a ½ educational fee scholarship provided through a grant from the Missouri Council on Economic Education. The number of scholarships is limited. Enroll early.
