Floral Development and Evolution in Insular Caribbean Species of Passiflora

We are using scanning electron microscopy to understand floral developmental differences involved with shifts in pollinator preference in Caribbean species of
Passiflora. Phylogenetic analysis using chloroplast markers has indicated that both bird and bat pollinated flowers have evolved from generalized insect-pollinated flowers. Morphologically and functionally similar flowers have been achieved through different ontogenetic pathways, including differing contributions from the corona, limen and operculum.
