Center For Transportation Studies

The Center for Transportation Studies (CTS) is an interdisciplinary, university-wide center located within the UMSL College of Business Administration, Department of Marketing. The Center has long been recognized for its research efforts in all modes of Transportation and additionally offers a comprehensive, robust teaching component where students have the opportunity to earn a Minor or Certification in Transportation. CTS faculty are drawn from academia and industry and are noted for their outstanding work in industry, logistics and supply chain management.

The Center for Transportation Studies (CTS), initiated in 2000, has been supported through endowments created by the Mercantile Library and the John W. Barriger III Railroad Library.

“Over the past 17 years, students and faculty of the Center for Transportation Studies have performed a large number of funded and non-funded research projects, reports, and publications. Much of the funding for the past 7 years has come from our participation in the Midwest Transportation Consortium (MTC) headed by Iowa State University and funded by the USDOT’s Office of University Research. During this period, over 20 graduate students have been supported through these grants. Most have graduated and are pursuing successful business careers both here and abroad. “
“In addition to this body of published research, the Center for Transportation Studies has also developed a strong Transportation curriculum for undergraduate students at UMSL. This curriculum has consisted of four courses in Transportation, Traffic and Transportation Management, Transportation Security, and Safety, as well as Aviation Business.   Through these courses, the Center has developed a Transportation Tract within the Marketing Department as well as a Minor in Transportation for both business and non-business students.   Qualified non-degree seeking students can also take these courses.
This academic year the Center is offering three additional new courses in Transportation. These courses are Transportation in Supply Chain Management – a non-quantitative approach looking at transportation in modern supply chains, Transportation and Global Trade Management which goes into detail about international trade documentation and payment; and Applied Technology for Transportation Management Systems – which provides the student with hands-on experience with TMS software. “
“As the Center for Transportation Studies at the University of Missouri-St. Louis looks to its third decade of existence, we hope to provide a balance of research and teaching that is aimed at addressing transportation issues and producing students prepared to enter the fields of transportation, logistics, and supply chain management.”
