Instructions for upgrading Microsoft Office 97 to Service Release 2 for Year 2000 Compliance


You must have Service Release 1 installed before you can install Service Release 2.  If SR-1 is already installed, you can skip to the SR-2 instructions otherwise begin by installing the SR-1 patch.

These instructions are for users who login to UMSL-SERVER1.  If you don't login to UMSL-SERVER1, Click here to download SR-1 and SR-2 directly from Microsoft.

Installing the SR-1 Patch (This will take about 15-45 minutes depending on the speed of your computer)

1.  Close any open applications.

2.  Click on the Start button at the bottom left hand corner of your screen.

3.  Click on Run.

4.  Type "m:\y2k\sr1" in the Run window without the quotation marks.

5.  Click OK.

After you start the patch, the License Agreement dialog box appears.

6.  Read the agreement and click Yes to start the next stage of the patching process. Clicking No ends the patching
process.

After the patch files are copied, a dialog box appears with a welcome message and an outline of the system
requirements for running the patch.

7.  Click Continue to allow the patching process to proceed.

A dialog box indicates that Setup is preparing to begin the patching process.

After a few moments, a list of the installed components that can be updated appears in a dialog box. The dialog box
also lists items that are already updated or items that the patch cannot update.

8.  Click Continue to begin the updating process.

A status dialog box keeps you updated on the progress of the patch.  Sometimes the progress meters may pause for several minutes at a time as though the computer has locked up.  Please be very patient and do not reboot.

At the conclusion of the patching process, a dialog box appears and prompts you to restart the computer.

9.  Click Yes to restart the computer which completes the patching process.  Once the computer has rebooted please proceed to the next section for instructions on installing Service Release 2.

 

Installing the SR-2 Patch (This will take about 5-10 minutes)

1.  Open Microsoft Word.  Click Help on the menu bar at the top of the window.  Click on About Microsoft Word.  Write down the 20 digit Product ID number on a piece of paper.  You will need this for the Service Release 2 update.

2.  Close Microsoft Word any other open applications.

3.  Click on the Start button at the bottom left hand corner of your screen.

4.  Click on Run.

5.  Type "m:\y2k\sr2" in the Run window without the quotation marks.

6.  Click OK.

After you start the patch, the License Agreement dialog box appears.

7.  Read the agreement and click Yes to start the next stage of the patching process. Clicking No ends the patching
process.

8.  After the update copies some files to your computer, you will be asked to enter the 20 digit Product ID Number which you wrote down in step one.  Enter the number and Click OK.

9.  Click OK on the window asking you to shut down all Microsoft Office 97 applications.  If you have followed the previous instruction, all Microsoft Office 97 applications will be shut down.

A progress meter will appear when the update resumes.

10.  Click OK on the window that says Microsoft Office97 SR-2 completed successfully and gives the location of the log file.

11.  Click Yes to restart the computer when prompted.
