Subject: Desktop Computer Year 2000 (Y2K) Compliance

In an effort to educate the campus about issues and available solutions surrounding desktop computers, Campus Computing requested your help by asking each unit to send a representative to one of two demonstrations held in April and October of 1999. These demonstrations provided information necessary to determine the exposure to risk your Unit's desktop systems might have come January 1, 2000 as well as solution procedure for supported desktop computer software.

We encourage each unit to be proactive in checking and updating their desktop software for Y2K compliance. All necessary procedures for updating campus desktop operating systems and applications are available at the following web site: http://www.umsl.edu/~cservices/y2k/y2k.html.

We realize that some units may prefer to have Campus Computing staff perform the tests and updates, outlined at the above web site, instead of their own staff. The fee for Campus Computing to provide this service is $20 per computer. If you choose to request this service, please place a work order by calling the Technology Support Center at X6034. To insure completion of the Y2K compatibility process by December 23, 1999, all requests must be placed through the Technology Support Center by November 29, 1999.

The $20 charge covers the following procedures (all of which are outlined on the web site):

If a system requires additional service, Campus Computing staff will inform you if the service is billable and proceed, with your approval, on a time and material basis.
