Cyprus In The European Union: Current Status And Future Prospects For Reunification
Cyprus' accession to the European Union (EU) is politically as well as strategically the single most important development for the country since independence in 1960, which has restructured the relations among Cyprus, Greece, Turkey, Europe, and the United States. In his lecture, Ambassador Evriviades will discuss Cyprus and its EU perspective, outline the prospects for peace in Cyprus in the fundamentally new political context of the EU, provide a glimpse of the current discussions about Turkey's aspirations to join the EU and how these may relate to Cyprus, and explain some troublesome developments in the bilateral relationship between Cyprus and the US.
His Excellency Euripides L. Evriviades presented his credentials as the Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to the United States to President George W. Bush at a White House ceremony on 4 December 2003. Mr. Evriviades is concurrently serving as non-resident High Commissioner of Cyprus to Canada. Until his appointment to the United States, Mr. Evriviades served as the Ambassador of Cyprus to the Netherlands and Israel, prior to which he held senior positions at Cypriot embassies in Libya, USSR/Russia, Germany, and the Permanent Mission of Cyprus to the United Nations. He holds a B.Sc. in Business Administration from the University of New Hampshire, a M.A. Public Administration (policy area of concentration: International Affairs and Security) from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University (1984), and an honorary Ph.D. from his alma mater, the University of New Hampshire. His decorations include the Great Commander of the Order of Orthodox Knights of the Holy Sepulcher, presented to him in Jerusalem in February 2000, and the Order of Merit (First Class) of the Federal Republic of Germany, awarded to him in March 1989.
