"Our experience at the Iklaina Project's archaeological field school in Pylos exceeded our expectations in every way possible. The exceptional educational content of the fieldwork, archaeology classes, and trips to other important sites in Greece was matched by exceptional beaches, food, and accommodations."
Amy and Larry Perlmutter, St. Louis, MO
Walking the land in rural Greece, I know I am part of the latest group to be crossing this ground, and there is something immensely comforting, and exciting as well, to feel such a direct connection --- through the earth --- with ancient peoples who lived out their own little segment of time there."
Anita Sullivan, Eugene, OR
"The project was a perfect combination of learning first-hand about archaeological methods; taking a survey course on the wide span of Greek civilization; and just plain fun... with a wonderful group of students and volunteers."
Ruth Kavesh, New York, NY
"The plan was to go to Pylos and participate in the University of Missouri – St. Louis archaeology program. We were "field walking". That means a team of 6 - 8 students pacing a square from the grid with heads down looking for pottery on the surface of the ground – usually olive groves, vineyards or ravines. Sound exciting? Well, it is. 30 of us (mostly 19-25 year olds) did it from 7 AM till after noon every day for 2 weeks. Yes, it was hot. Yes, I am nice and brown. No, there are no laundromats in Pylos. Yes, I gained 5 pounds. Also swam almost every day, toured several archaeological sites (Nestor’s Palace, Olympia, Mycenae, Bassai), learned to distinguish pottery from rocks and to some degree, types of pottery – Mycenaean (the favourite), Roman ribbed ware, Byzantine, Turkish and modern, tiles and pots. All in all the course was really great."
