Throughout the history of art, the medium of printmaking has offered artists new and unique approaches for visual expression. There exists a multitude of techniques and processes for artists to choose from in the field of printmaking. Artists may favor one form of printmaking that best suits their style of working over another or may combine a variety of print processes, taking advantage of unique qualities found in each.

Instructor

Jeff Sippel
Jeff, associate professor and BFA coordinator for Art and Art History at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, received his Master of Fine Arts degree from Arizona State University. Sippel has served on the faculties of The Ohio State University and the University of New Mexico.

 

Topics

This course offers an introduction to all four primary areas of printmaking. It surveys a variety of methods for visual expression through lectures and demonstrations of:

  • relief
  • etching
  • silkscreen
  • lithography

Class will meet from noon to 5:00 p.m. and will allow time for individual help and time to work on assignments.

No textbook is required for this course. Handouts will be provided and students will be expected to keep a daily journal from lectures and demonstrations. Most equipment and supplies for this course are provided, but students will be expected to bring their own paper and drawing tools.
