Before Hubble (1929), ‘everyone’ thought we lived in a static universe
But the usual theories of gravitation, whether Newton or Einstein, do not allow a static universe
GR: A static universe is an empty universe
Einstein modified his GR field eqn, by adding a term ~ cosmic repulsion to counter the usual gravitational attraction, making it possible to have a static universe
