UMSL CHEMIST - UMSL Chemist is our annual magazine of departmental and alumni news. The Fall 2007 edition is now complete and will be in the mail to alumni shortly. IMPORTANT DATES AND EVENTS 2008
- March 17, 2008. Robert W. Murray Lecture -The Eleventh Robert W. Murray Lecture was given by William R. Roush, Executive Director of Medicinal Chemistry at Scripps Florida.
- April 28, 2008. The 21st Annual Alumni Lecture was presented by Dr. Timothy T. Wenzel. Tim is a Research Leader at Dow Chemical Co. in Midland MI. He received a BS in chemistry here in 1978 and then did a Ph.D degree at Cornell University with Professor Mel Goldstein followed by postdoctoral work with Professor Robert Bergman at UC-Berkeley. He spent several years at Union Carbide in Charleston WV which became a subsidiary of the Dow Chemical Co. in 1999. His recent research has involved novel approaches to olefin polymerization referred to in the literature as "chain shuttling polymerization". Some of his work was published recently in Science magazine and featured in chemistry and Engineering News. The lecture, "New Polymers from Old Monomers" wasl held at 4:00 pm on April 30 in room 451 Benton Hall following a 30 minute awards program. A reception followed in the Alumni Center.
- Aug. 2, 2008. August Commencement. The speaker at the College of Arts and Sciences Commencement in the Touhill Performing Arts Center was Dr. Charles W. Armbruster, the founder of the department, who chaired the department from 1963 - 1975 and taught mostly organic and introductory chemistry, with distinction, until 1998. In addition Charlie was presented with the Chancellor's Medallion. Commencement was followed by a most successful reception in the third-floor rotunda of the Millenium Student Center from 3:30 - 5:30 pm. About 130 individuals were in attendance including about 90 alumni.
- October 24, 2008. Alumna to give seminar: Roberta L. Farrell, BS 1975, and currently Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Waikato, Hamilton, New Zealand, will speak on "Science in Antarctica: Studying the Historic huts of the Heroic Era of Antarctic Exploration-To the Ice and Back, an UMSL Alumna's Holidays". Further details will be forthcoming.
- December 5, 2008. Robert W. Murray Lecture -The Twelfth Robert W. Murray Lecture wil be presented by Phillip P. Power, Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Californis-Davis. Further details will be forthcoming.

A former student from the Department of Chemistry at UM-St.
Louis delivers this annual lecture, which is followed by a reception.
This forms part of the regular departmental seminar program and
is typically scheduled for the first Monday in May as the
final seminar of the academic year. The lecture follows presentation
of the Annual Departmental Awards.
