Poetry and Short Story Reading Series Winter, 2005

The Poetry and Short Story Reading Series is cosponsored with the University of Missouri-St. Louis Department of English. The series is organized by the Department of English faculty members Mary Troy, Howard Schwartz, and Steve Schreiner. The Series features contemporary poets and short story writers who read from their original works. The Series gives our faculty, students, and community the chance to hear the original works of writers from throughout the United States. All of the readings are free and open to the public. Robert Ford reads from his recent work. His first novel, The Student Conductor, was published in 2003 by Putnam. It was one of Booklist's ten best novels of 2003, and was a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers selection. It was awarded the Jesse Jones award for Best Book of Fiction and the Steven Turner Award for Best First Book of Fiction by the Texas Institute of Letters. A U.K. edition of the novel was published in June, 2004 under the title Rhapsody. A paperback edition was issued in fall 2004, and the book is now being translated into Italian.

David Haynes reads from his recent writings. He is the author of The Full Malitda (2004), All American Dream Dolls (2002), Live at Five (2000), Heathens (1996), Somebody Else's Mama (1995), and Right By My Side (1993). Haynes has won a Granta Magazine Award for Best New Novelists (1996). Haynes teaches at AMU in Dallas and is on the faculty of the Warren Wilson low residency MFA program.
