Fall 2011

Dr. Kristin Carbone-Lopez was selected as the recipient of this year’s American Society of Criminology Division on Women and Crime's New Scholar Award.

Andrea Nichols won the American Society of Criminology's Division on Women and Crime Graduate Student Paper competition for her paper "Feminist Advocacy in Community Based Responses to Domestic Violence: An Examination of Feminist Identities, Ideologies and Practices." 

Dr. Stephanie DiPietro and Bianca Bersani received the 2011 W.E.B. DuBois Fellowship for their proposal “An Examination of the "Marriage Effect" on Desistance from Crime among U.S. Immigrants.”

Stephanie Wiley* was awarded a Doctoral Fellowship  for 2011-2012 by the Graduate School.

After completing her doctorate in Summer 2011, Dr. Dena Carson joins the department as an Assistant Research Professor. We're pleased to have the opportunity to continue working with Dr. Carson.

Summer 2011

Dena Carson* was selected as co-third place in the American Society of Criminology Gene Carte Student Paper Award competition for her paper, “Examining the Effect of Peers on Changes in Delinquent Attitudes: A Longitudinal Study.” 

Nicole White* was featured in an UMSL News profile. Her dedication to her research and determination to complete her degree despite serious health issues is an inspiration to the entire department.  Congratulations, Dr. White!

Spring 2011

Dr. Richard Wright is this year's recipient of UMSL Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Service. Congratulations!

After 17 years of service to UMSL, Dr. G. David Curry is retiring. In his honor there will be a small reception in our department office on May 3 from 3 - 4:30pm. Please stop by to wish him well!

Andrea Nichols* received a number of awards, including: Jane Addams Outstanding Service Award (Midwest Sociological Society 2011), Public Policy Research Center Dissertation Fellowship (University of Missouri St. Louis 2011), Students Appreciating Teachers Award and Teacher of The Year (St. Louis Community College 2011). Congratulations, Andrea!

After completing his doctorate, Brian Oliver* will pursue additional graduate training in Theological Studies at Northwestern College.

After a nationwide search, we are delighted to announce that Dr. Stephanie Di Pietro will be our new Assistant Professor (PhD, University of Maryland). Dr. Di Pietro joined us in Fall 2010 as a Visiting Assistant Professor.

The Graduate School has awarded Dena Carson* a dissertation fellowship for the 2010-2011 school year.

Mike Vecchio* received Honorable Mention in the 2010 Midwest Criminal Justice Association Graduate Student Paper Competition.

CCJ faculty ranked among the top 15 doctoral programs in Criminology and Criminal Justice according to the 2010 scores by Academic Analytics. According to US NEWS, CCJ ranks 4th among doctoral programs in the Nation.

Drs. Janet Lauritsen and Rick Rosenfeld have received the 2009-2010 Claude S. Fisher Award for Excellence in Contexts. Congratulations!

Congratulations to our new Ph.D graduates/candidates on the job market for their successful transition to faculty positions: Scott Jacques (University of Cincinnati), Michele Stacey (Virginia Union University) and Brendan Dooley (Saint Augustine's College). Good luck and keep in touch!

We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Stephanie DiPietro as our new Visiting Assistant Professor. Dr. DiPietro recently completed her Ph.D at the University of Maryland.

Dr. Finn-Aage Esbensen is this year's recipient of UMSL Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Research and Creativity. Congratulations!

Kudos to Jennifer Owens(*) for being awarded a fellowship from the Bureau of Justice Statistics to attend the 2010 ICPSR summer course on "Quantitative Analysis of Crime and Criminal Justice Data".

Dr. Jody Miller's book "Getting Played" has received the 2010 Distinguished Contribution to Scholarship Book Award by the Race, Class, Gender Section of the American Sociological Association (ASA).

Brian Oliver* has received a grant from the Bureau of Justice Statistics/American Sociological Association to support his dissertation research on recidivism. Congratulations!

Drs. Chris Melde (Michigan State University, also an alumn of CCJ), T.J. Taylor and Finn-Aage Esbensen have been selected to receive  the William L. Simon Outstanding Paper Award from ACJS for their paper, "'I Got Your Back': An Examination of the Protective Function of Gang Membership in Adolescence" (Criminology, 2009). Learn more.

The British Journal of Sociology turns 60! Join Dr. Richard Wright, BJS Editor-in-Chief to celebrate. Also read online the 60th Anniversary Issue.

 

Fall 2009

Ph.D student Jennifer Owens* received the Richard Block Award from the Homicide Research Working Group for her Master's thesis at the University of Nebraska. M.A. student Michael J. Deckard was awarded the UMSL CCJ Edward G. Longinette Scholarship.

Dr. Beth Huebner has been honored with the 2009 Distinguished New Scholar Award from ASC's Division on Corrections and Sentencing. Congratulations!

CCJ Professor and ASC President Dr. Rick Rosenfeld met with US Attorney General Eric Holder and past ASC president Dr. Todd Clear to discuss the activities of the ASC.

Dr. Jody Miller has been selected as the 2009 recipient of the ASC-Division of People of Color and Crime Coramae Rickey Mann Award for her "outstanding contribution of scholarship on race/ethnicity, crime, and justice." Way to go Jody!

Dr. Lee Ann Slocum is the 2009 recipient of the UMSL Gerald and Deanne Gitner Excellence in Teaching Award. Congratulations!

Dr. Finn-Aage Esbensen has been named new Chair of the CCJ Department. Many thanks to Dr. Richard Wright (outgoing Chair) for his service.

After nationwide searches, we are delighted to welcome Dr. Terrance J. Taylor to CCJ as our new Assistant Professor (PhD, University of Nebraska), and Dr. Kristy Matsuda as Assistant Research Professor (PhD, University of California Irvine).

CCJ invites applicants for the position of Visiting Assistant Professor, to begin August 2010. Review of applications will begin on November 1, 2009 and continue until the position is filled. See details.

Dr. Janet Lauritsen was appointed to the Committee on Law and Justice, Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education, National Academy of Sciences.

Dr. Andres Rengifo has been appointed Research Fellow at the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University (Program in Criminal Justice Policy & Management).

Dr. Richard Rosenfeld was appointed to the National Academy of Sciences Panel entitled "Developing Metrics for the Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Research".

Dr. Finn Esbensen received the 2009 President's Award of the Western Society of Criminology.

Dr. Jody Miller's Getting Played (NYU Press, 2008), is a finalist for the prestigious 2008 C. Wright Mills Book Award by the Society for the Study of Social Problems (SSSP). Congratulations!

Tiffany Polk* and Allen Shamow* have been selected for the 2009 ICPSR Summer Course on Quantitative Analysis of Crime and Criminal Justice Data on fellowships by the Bureau of Justice Statistics.

Our Department has once again ranked among the best in the country. U.S. News & World Report named UMSL's CCJ program the fourth best nationally. Rankings appeared in the magazine's 2010 edition of "America's Best Graduate Schools"

Dr. Richard Wright has been named a Fellow of the American Society of Criminology. Congratulations! Drs. Bursik and Rosenfeld are also ASC Fellows.

Amanda Gendon* has been named one of the recipients of the 2009 Graduate Minority Fellowship by the American Society of Criminology.

The Graduate School has awarded Scott Jacques* a dissertation fellowship for the 2009-2010 school year.

Dr. Beth Huebner has been promoted to Associate Professor and granted tenure (effective Fall 2009). Congratulations!



Fall 2008

Congratulations to our Ph.D Candidates on the job market for their successful transition to faculty positions: Mark T. Berg (Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis), Jennifer Cobbina (Michigan State University) and Kimberly Martin and Bradley Brick (Old Dominion University). Keep in touch!

Jennifer Owens* won the Elton S. Carter Thesis Award for Excellence in a Master's Thesis at the University of Nebraska Omaha.

Colonel Dan Isom II, one of our PhD graduates, has been named the new Chief of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department. Chancellor George and the UMSL Alumni Association will host a meet-and-greet reception on Dec. 4th.

Jennifer Cobbina* has been awarded a dissertation fellowship by the National Institute of Justice.

Mike Vecchio* was the winner of the Graduate Student Paper Competition at the 2008 Meetings of the Midwestern Criminal Justice Association.

Congratulations to Dr. Richard Rosenfeld and Dr. Jody Miller for their recent elections in the American Society of Criminology (ASC). Dr. Rosenfeld has been elected the incoming President and Dr. Jody Miller has been elected Executive Counselor.

Dr. Andres Rengifo has been appointed by the Colombian Bureau of the Census to serve in a 3-member independent commission seeking to assess the quality of crime and police statistics compiled by the Colombian Government.

Dr. Jody Miller was promoted to full Professor. Congratulations!

Dr. Allen Wagner
's book Good Order and Safety: A History of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, 1861-1906 has been published by the Missouri Historical Society Press.

Ekaterina Archakova* received a fellowship from the Bureau of Justice Statistics to attend the course "Quantitative Analysis of Crime and Criminal Justice Data" at ICPSR.

Dr. Jody Miller's book Getting Played has been published by NYU Press.

Mark Berg* has been awarded a Harry Frank Guggenheim dissertation fellowship. He is expected to graduate around May, 2009.

Brendan Dooley* has received a dissertation award from the Institute for Humane Studies.

Dr. Richard Rosenfeld received an award from the St. Louis Regional Chamber and Growth Association (RCGA) and the St. Louis Association of Realtors

Dr. Beth Huebner received the 2008 Tori Caeti Young Scholar Award from the Juvenile Justice Section of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences.

Dr. Richard Wright was appointed Editor-in-Chief of the British Journal of Sociology (BJS). BJS is now ranked #3 out of 96 Sociology journals according to the ISI.
