SPRING 2012

February 6, 2012

CCJ Guest Speaker Series:
The Criminology of Place: Street Segments and Our Understanding of the Crime Problem
Dr. David Weisburd (George Mason University)

The study of crime has focused primarily on why particular people commit crime or why specific communities have higher levels of crime.  In this presentation Professor Weisburd presents findings from a forthcoming Oxford University Press Book (co-authored with Elizabeth Groff and SueMing Yang), that identifies a different way of looking at the crime problem by examining why specific streets in a city have specific crime trends over time.  This study of the “criminology of place,” focuses our attention on small units of geographic analysis, or micro communities. The study shows that much information about crime is necessarily lost by focusing on larger units such as neighborhoods or communities.  The authors identify a large group of possible crime risk and protective factors of street segments.

The event is free and open the public. Refreshments will be served.

Control of Police Misconduct in a Post-Exclusionary Rule World: Can It Be Done?

In recent cases like Michigan v. Hudson, four members of the United States Supreme Court have indicated that the exclusionary rule for Fourth Amendment violations is no longer necessary because other remedies are now effective in controlling police behavior, such as better training, civilian review boards and civil rights lawsuits. This conference will bring together academics and practitioners to discuss other possible remedies and assess whether they are, in fact, effective in controlling police behavior.

UMSL CCJ Guest Speaker Series:
American Capital Punishment: A Theoretical Problem for Sociological Analysis
Dr. David Garland (New York University)

The forms and functions of capital punishment, as practiced in 21st century America, are not well understood by sociological theory. The interpretive frameworks found in the sociological literature are mostly premised upon historical rather than contemporary practices, while the legal and criminological studies that do engage with the contemporary are primarily concerned with legal and moral critique rather than sociological understanding.

Drawing on the speaker's recent book "Peculiar Institution: America's Death Penalty in an Age of Abolition", this lecture develops a theoretical account of the modern American death penalty. Using historical and comparative research, and addressing the distinctive characteristics of the American polity and group relations, the analysis aims to explain the specific forms through which capital punishment is currently administered and the social uses to which it is put.

The event is free and open the public. Refreshments will be served.

Research Methodology Workshop: Spatial Analysis

Researchers from a variety of disciplines rely on Geographic Information Systems (GIS).  GIS organizes geographic data into a series of thematic layers arranged in tables. Because data in a GIS are referenced to geography, they have real-world locations and immediate, real-life applications. GIS links the specified location to each layer (such as people to addresses, buildings to parcels, or streets within a network) to provide a better understanding of how the features interrelate (learn more).

Understanding the threat of victmization inside and outside gangs
