## Mathematics Course Placement

##

Students who are enrolled for current or future terms will be included in the MyGateway Organization named Student Math Placement to provide access to the ALEKS online math placement test. ALEKS is also accessible to newly accepted students and all other undergrads through here:

**ALEKS Placement Test**

The University of Missouri - Saint Louis requires an ALEKS mathematics placement assessment to determine readiness for various courses. The ALEKS Placement Assessment covers material from Basic Math through Precalculus and will take approximately 90 minutes to complete. After the assessment, a targeted Prep and Learning Module is available for you to review and learn material, and to improve placement and eventual course outcomes.

All students are strongly encouraged to spend several hours using the ALEKS Prep and Learning Module. Even if you have achieved placement in your desired course, time spent in ALEKS will better prepare you for your upcoming course and ultimately lead to better grades.

** First of all, RELAX.** This is an “assessment,” NOT A TEST. The difference is that an assessment is designed to determine what you know. At the end of the ALEKS Placement Assessment, you will have a much better sense of your strengths and weaknesses in math. You will then have a chance to work on those weaknesses. There is really no penalty for incorrectly answering a question on the assessment. The most important thing is that you take the assessment seriously and give it an honest effort so that the assessment truly reflects your level of knowledge and math preparedness.

**Be honest about your skill level. **There is no benefit to cheating on the placement assessment – your only reward will be that you are forced to take a class that is too difficult for your current level of mathematical knowledge. Therefore, while you are taking the assessment, do not consult any other source for help (friends, family, internet searches, etc.). The purpose of the placement assessment is to give an accurate measure of your current mathematical skills so that you will be successful in your mathematics courses. Student Conduct Code.

In order to qualify to take a Math department course at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, students must have one of the following:

You will login to take the assessment online through the MyGateway Organization or the link above and on the right, and there is no fee or registration required. In case you are not satisfied with your score on the ALEKS assessment, you will be given the chance to take the assessment up to five times. In addition, there is a free online Preparation and Learning Module that you can use to review and prepare for the ALEKS assessment and your upcoming math course at UMSL. Once the Module is accessed, you have six weeks to take the ALEKS assessment. Your subscription is provided free of charge for six months. If you do not achieve an adequate score, there will be a $25 charge to re-subscribe. In most cases, your assessment score will determine your math course placement.

**Important ALEKS Information**

**Do I Need to Take the ALEKS assessment? **

**To determine whether you are required to take the ALEKS assessment, use the following guidelines:**

**Determine what Math course(s) are required for your intended major.** If you are uncertain about the requirements, check with your major department or in the University course catalog.

**Do you have credit for the required course(s)?** (Credits earned from UMSL or from transfer/dual/AP/IB credit.) If you already have credits for the required course(s), then you will not need to take the ALEKS assessment.

**Do you have credit for the prerequisite course(s)?** (Math 1030 equivalent credits earned from transfer/dual/AP/IB credit) It is recommended that you take the ALEKS assessment in order to determine whether you are prepared for the next level Math course you plan to take.

**Still not sure?** Check with your academic adviser to find out more, or just go ahead and take the ALEKS assessment to have a score on record. The assessment is online, and you can take the assessment up to five times for free.

**Is there a fee for using ALEKS?**

Use of ALEKS is included in your student fees. However, if an adequate score is not achieved in 6 weeks, a resubscription will be required and a $25 fee assessed.

**Can I retake the ALEKS Placement Assessment?**

Yes, you may take up to 5 placement assessments. However, to make each attempt worthwhile, it is important that you spend time working in your ALEKS Prep and Learning Module in between placement assessments so that you can improve your skills.

**Are ALEKS Placement Assessments proctored?**Only for placement in Math 1800 or for demonstrating math proficiency.

**Can I retake the ALEKS Placement Assessment immediately?**

You must wait [48] hours between placement assessments. There is generally no benefit to re-taking the assessment immediately after completing a prior attempt.
