We are working on the systematics, biogeography, and evolution of flowering plants, with a focus on the evolution of pollination and sexual systems. Sexual systems being studied are dioecy, heterodichogamy, and sex change, especially in the Cucurbitaceae and Cucurbitales, clades with predominantly unisexual flowers. Biogeographic work is centering on Cucurbitaceae, Melastomataceae, Chloranthaceae, Araceae, and families in the order Laurales, namely Calycanthaceae, Atherospermataceae, Hernandiaceae, Lauraceae, Monimiaceae, and Siparunaceae *see online Flora of Ecuador. A strong interest are molecular clocks, especially issues surrounding their calibration with fossils.
