Reflections on the UM-St.Louis Student Teaching Experience --2005

CYNTHIA NIEBLING and NANCY DEVINE

Team Teaching

Student Teaching promotes a team within a classroom. Team teaching is guided practice with your classroom teacher, providing both the opportunity to apply learned teaching skills, as well as setting the stage for further reflection and continual improvement. This experience provides individual improvement and professional development for both the student teacher and classroom teacher alike!

The Role of a Teacher

The student teaching experience gives the opportunity for you to jump into the shoes of the classroom teacher. The shoes are not just for instructing, but also the many roles you fill while in these shoes.

Teacher Initiated Discussion

The environment you create as a teacher will determine your ability to engage students in discussion.

Time Management

Time management is a necessary skill learned through experience in the classroom. Teachers must allow time to circulate the classroom in order to assist students one-on-one, or in small group settings.

Classroom Management

By providing a structured environment and clear expectations for your students, management of the classroom becomes easier. Students use self-monitoring to stay on task, enhancing their own learning.

Hands - On Learning

Once management is put into affect, applying cooperative learning activities is more effective. Cooperative learning involves hands - on materials, games, teamwork, and self-monitoring by students.

Reciprocal Teaching

Students learn 95% of what they teach. When incorporating student group activities, students practice reciprocal teaching by teaching each other.

Guided Practice

As a teacher, scaffolding is important to guide students in their learning. A great tool for student achievement is guiding them through practice.

Student -Teacher Relationships

Building rapport with students establishes confidence within students own learning. The trust and comfort level between student and teacher builds the relationship that is necessary for communication.
