GEOGRAPHIC LITERACY:  Part 1. GEOGRAPHY DICTIONARY: A Workshop  Approach to building a geography vocabulary.

The formula is simple:

Part 1. Thinking and Background Information:

1.    IDENTIFY PROBLEMS to be Solved:  A whole-class CrossTalk to identify problems to be solved.

Over 100 Geography Vocabulary words to learn in the 1st week of school !!! A classroom full of students new to PCMS and new to eachother.   HOW ???   …the solution: A BLUE-SCREEN, VIRTUAL REALITY, Vocabulary Movie. … a movie made by Team 6-4 Vocab Specialists !!!

2. BACKGROUND: One week of Direct Instruction by the teacher.   Worksheets, skill development, _notes from text, and vocabulary assignments by the student.....  with  quizzes, etc.(Students usually work by themselves.)

 

·      Vocabulary:  Geography Vocab –Found in  Explore Geography Picture Dictionary, (Laurie Regan, Ballard and Tighe Publishing).  Be able to correctly define and use (read, write, talk) the geography vocabulary found in text. Each Coop Learning Group will become specialists on their 13 vocabulary words.   

3. VOCABULARY CERTIFICATION: (to be completed in Part 2, below):

Part 2. Building Knowledge and Concepts:

1.  THE STUDENTS BECOME EXPERTS: The students are problem solvers who research, work at Print Media Stations and Educational Technology Stations in order to get information and data which they think about, rebuild into a personal library of information and personal experiences.

2.   THE STUDENTS REFLECT on the information they have found; they re-sequence the information and re-think it. Small group discussions, study groups, collaborative On-Line discussions (The TALKING PLACE), and interactive quizzes provide opportunities to refine learning and build understanding.  The students relate the details they find during their research to the concepts introduced (in Part 1) and thereby develop a deeper understanding of those concepts.

 

(The following tasks are to be completed as Rotations …

·      ( W) performed by the entire class at the same time (with the help of the teacher)

·      ( G)  performed each coop group   (with the help of the teacher if needed)

·      ( S)  performed by each student-by self- within a coop group (with the help of the teacher if needed)

 3. GEOGRAPHY DICTIONARY:   —“BUILDING KNOWELDGE”     ROTATIONS

JOB #1  STORY BOARD NOTES (S)

1. Write StoryBoard Notes on the 13 words assigned to your coop group.

JOB #2  GRAPHIC BOARD QUIZ (G)

1.Study your 13 words.  Make sure each person in the group understands each vocab word…and can use a picture to explain or describe an example of what each word means.

2.  Request to take the Graphic Board Quiz … this is your way to qualify as “Voc Specialists” !!

JOB #3  (PRACTICE for Presentation) (G)

1. Use your StoryBoard Notes and the Blue Screen Presentation Rubric to practice explaining and describing your 13 vocab words. 

2. Determine Roles;  each Voc Specialist Group must have a main speaker and 1 or 2  “Pointers” who help “show” what the word means.  Rotate roles within your group.

JOB #4  STORY BOARD NOTES –PART 2 (G)

1. Those coop groups which fail to qualify as Voc Specialists, must write StoryBoard Notes on each of he 132 geography vocab words and be prepared for a test on these words.

2.  All Voc Specialist Groups are EXEMPT from this  Job.

            4. THE TEACHER MANAGES all these opportunities for students to explore and to  build knowledge and concepts.

Part 3. Communicating What Has Been Learned:

1.  THE EXPERTS CERTIFY THEIR KNOWLEDGE AND SOLUTIONS TO PROBLEMS: The students respond to test questions and test activities in order to certify their knowledge of details and understanding of concepts.

2.  THE WORKSHOP:  STUDENTS PREPARE TO TEACH:  The students create multi-media presentations in which they demonstrate through informative cross-teaching, the quality of their knowledge of details and understanding of concepts.

3. GEOGRAPHY DICTIONARY:   —“COMMUNICATING WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED”  TEST, WORKSHOP AND TEACHING - PRESENTATION  ROTATIONS

JOB # 1. PRESENTATION: (S)

1.     Use Blue Screen Technology to present your 13 voc words

2.   This is actually your TEST on the Geog Vocab.

3.   You will each receive a Geog Vocab Grade and an Presentation Grade

JOB # 2.  EVALUATION PANEL (G)

1. Each Vocab Specialists Group will serve as an Evaluation Panel and use the Blue Screen Presentation Rubric to score the “performance” of another Vocab Specialists Groups.

JOB # 3.  TALKING PLACE: (S)- Self Evaluation

1. Each student must join the Talking Place discussion

2.     Each student must  write a “Self-Group Evaluation Report
