2. NEWS FLASH !! ³PCMS TEACHERS LOST IN CANADA!²: Dateline, Ottawa, Canada, winter 2003.  The Canadian Intelligence Center (CIC) reports that 5 Americans are lost somewhere in Canada.  The Royal Canadian mounted Police has determined that these people are lost in separate places in Canada and unless rescued in the next 2-3 weeks, they will die.  Such is the Law of Nature in the Canadian Wilderness in the Wintertime!  The Mounted Police regret to re¼ort that they do not have the personnel to conduct search and rescue missions.

However, the CIC advises that any groups of 5-6 americans who are ¼roperly ttrained will be allowed a tem¼orary visa to search for, find, rescue, and bring back to the United States the-------

Ladies and gentlemen, WE HAVE LOST TRANSMISSION OF THE NEWS FLASH.  But we were able to collect the names of the lost  Americans.   Mr. Sainz, Mr. Ambrose, Mrs. Shanker, Mrs. Platte, and Mrs. Holloway., Mrs. Baskin

Groups of Americans must form immediately and begin to discuss:

  1. Exactly how to prepare to (and follow through with) the rescue of these unfortunate lost Americans.
  2. What supplies should the rescue parties take along?  What will the weather be like? How should they travel? Ca, horse, snowshoes, kayak, dog sled?  It will all depend on the geography of the part of Canada in which each American is lost.
  3. The CIC insists that all visa holders know a lot about: survival, inter-dependence, self-reliance, common sense, and respect for the laws of nature.

Each Rescue  Group MUST Obtain a Canadian Visa from the CIC.  This involves...

1.     knowing how to read Canadian maps, .

2.    ..knowing how to use Musher Vocabulary, ...(Balto will make a special  appearance in a Team 6-4 classroom to help introduce these vocabulary words.)

3.    Learn from Will Stoneman, an American boy who survived the Canadian Wilderness in 1916.  Will Stoneman will speak to students of Team 6-4 sometime during the next 7 days.  A "Survival Lunch" will be eaten by Americans during this presentation by Mr. Will Stoneman. Dogs, wolves, and polar bears not allowed.---concept chart. Mr. Stoneman will speak on the following topic: ³Survival, inter-dependence, self-reliance, common sense, and respect for the laws of nature.

4.    Famous musher, Sam McGee ( the "Cremation of Sam McGee") will  also teach the young Americans (Team 6-4) a lot about survival, inter-dependence, self-reliance, common sense, and respect for the laws of nature.

5.    A slider quiz , a PAWS Quiz,  and a map quiz will let the students prove to the CIC  that they have indeed learned a lot ... and are close to ready to search for and rescue the 5 almost frozen Americans.

6.    Learn what it is really takes to be a hero and rescue someoneŠ. Learn this from BALTO.

Part 2. Building Knowledge and Concepts:

1.  THE STUDENTS BECOME EXPERTS: The students are problem solvers who research, work at Print Media Stations and Educational Technology Stations in order to get information and data which they think about, rebuild into a personal library of information and personal experiences.

Students relate the details they find during their research to the concepts introduced (in Part 1) and thereby develop a deeper understanding of those concepts.
