For this assignment, you are living in St. Louis during the 1850s. You are going to write a letter to your grandmother in another state. You will also fill in the street map of the courthouse district (instructions for finding map to follow). The map will not be attached to your letter but must be turned in.

The letter MUST include:

Description of the city, including buildings and street names whenever possible. Insert the riverboat on the map. Use your street map for these notes. You can then use this map as you create your letter. In the letter, at least one building’s importance must be described in detail. Be specific. Remember the map must be turned in with the letter.
Description of at least one important person living in St. Louis at this time. Why is this person important to St. Louis history?
Explain one important event occurring in St. Louis at this time. Why is it significant to St. Louis history?
Determine and explain one advantage and one disadvantage of living in, or near the city of St. Louis in the 1850s.

As you read and navigate the site, take notes to use in creating your letter. Always go to “Perspectives” when available. This is a link to primary sources.

TO FIND THE MAP OF THE COURTHOUSE DISTRICT:

From the 1850 site, scroll down to the bottom of the page to “Go to Site Index”. The first listing is “Map and Guide” - go to “Courthouse District”. This will give you a street map of the area.

Go back to “decade home” and again scroll to the bottom of the page and pull up the “statistical information”.

You will now start your navigation of the website from the riverboat. Navigate to find information on John Berry Meachum. You can link to other information from this site. Continue navigating the sites until you have all the information you need to write your letter and fill out the map.
