USING GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS TO REPRESENT THE CITY OF ST. LOUIS IN THE 1950s

Overview
This assignment has the student creating graphic organizers to describe four areas of the city of St. Louis in the 1950s. They will utilize the Virtual City website. After creating the graphic organizers, each student will write a brief summary of one person, place or event from their organizer to explain the connection to St. Louis history. Each student will read/present their summary to the rest of the class.

Objectives
After completing this lesson, students will:

Be able to navigate the St. Louis Virtual City website.
Apply informational knowledge learned in a critical way.
Analyze and interpret documents from the Virtual City website. This will include maps.
Evaluate how a person, place or event of the 1950s is important to St. Louis history.

Process

Ask the class what they think they know about St. Louis in the 1950s. Include in the discussion how the riverfront and buildings looked in this time period. Discuss transportation, education, shopping, politics, entertainment, etc.
Introduce the website to the class. Pull up the decade of the 1950s. Demonstrate how to navigate the streets and gather information from the right side.
Review graphic organizers with the students. This lesson plan is written for a Concept Map or Word Web, but it could be revised for the graphic organizer of your choice. Inspiration is a great program for this lesson, if available to you and your students.
