Show Me Standards 1.2, 1.8,
1.5, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 3.6
Process
- Reflect on what they have learned
about St. Louis in lessons 1 and 2.
- Return to the Virtual City and
travel through time (using the time travel feature) to note the similarities
and
differences of both time periods.
- In small groups, have the students
draw a Venn diagram on chart paper noting what remains the same about the
city
in the overlap and what was unique
in
the city in the 1850’s and 1950’s in their respective circles.
Have students focus on the culture of the city as shown in the website
through the buildings, the people, the neighborhoods, transportation,
occupations, etc.

Further Development
- Have students complete a time capsule
for today to further compare the changes in the city. Have students take
a trip downtown or look at current
maps and
brochures. Ask students to interview friends, family members or neighbors
who work downtown. Ask again how the changes have improved city living and
what the disadvantages of the changes are.
One More Step
- Ask students to create a
time capsule for fifty years in the future. What changes might occur
to further improve
the city? Which buildings, roads,
or districts
will be removed? Will there be advances in technology that will
eliminate some of the city’s landscape? Draw a map of the future
city.
