Department stores including Scruggs Vandervoort and Barney hosted a number of public events. Fashion shows were a great way to not only introduce a new clothing line but also to attract customers to the store. Some of these shows included celebrity appearances, which added to the excitement. Fashion shows reinforced gender roles by telling people what they should wear. These events often catered to women. This type of event brought a great deal of attention to the department store and its ability to host such a show was a confirmation of its high profile, and success.
