Internet2 Marks Five Year Anniversary of its Sponsored Education Group Participant Program
SEGP program grows to 36 U.S. State Education Networks; Internet2 commits to continued support of valuable program.
https://mail.internet2.edu/wws/arc/i2-news/2006-08/msg00002.html

This summer, Internet2 is pleased to mark the five year anniversary of its Sponsored Education Group Participant (SEGP) program which has successfully promoted the use of advanced networks among the K-20 community by providing state education networks access to the nationwide Internet2 network. The SEGP program was initiated in 2001 based on the feedback and support of several Internet2 members, The Quilt, the Internet2 Network Planning and Policy Advisory Council and the broad Internet2 community. To date, 36 state networks have been able to participate in the program through generous sponsorships by Internet2 university members. The Internet2 SEGP program has grown to connect more than 46,000 U.S. K-12 schools, community colleges, libraries, performing arts centers and museums to the Internet2 network. Through this program, the K20 community has been responsible for creating virtual classrooms and laboratories that are revolutionizing the way young students learn--regardless of their physical location. Today, students have access to world-class learning experiences such as taking master music classes taught by world-renowned musicians using DVD-quality videoconferencing or performing science experiments with advanced electron microscopes using remote imaging instruments or observing profound environmental events in real-time. The new Internet2 Network, scheduled for deployment in 2007, promises to provide the K-20 community even greater capabilities and will serve as an enhanced development platform for innovations yet to be imagined by this important segment of the Internet2 community.

Signet and Grouper to Provide Research and Education Institutions Enhanced Privilege Management Capabilities
https://mail.internet2.edu/wws/arc/i2-news/2006-08/msg00001.html

Internet2's Middleware Initiative introduced its Signet Privilege Management System and the Grouper Group Management Toolkit. Signet and Grouper make it easier to manage access to protected online resources by providing research and academic institutions the critical software and tools needed to support enhanced institution-wide role- and permission-based authorization for appropriate access to resources.
The Signet Privilege Management System provides institutions an easy-to-use framework to manage user access privileges in terms familiar to business managers and provides a consolidated, shared authorization data repository that is independent of any specific institutional systems. The first production version of the Grouper Group Management Toolkit, released 21 July, enables both automated and manual mechanisms for assigning users to groups based on their individual campus affiliations, status, or other relevant roles. In the future, Signet and Grouper will be able to support the management of virtual organizations and aid the grid computing community by giving project teams spread around the world the ability to manage access to resources that are geographically dispersed. Development of Grouper was supported with funding from the University of Chicago and the University of Bristol and with additional support from Internet2, the NSF Middleware Initiative (NMI) and the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC).
