UMSL Student Email

Information Technology Services is excited to announce the upgrade of Student Email to Microsoft Office 365 for education. After the upgrade you can take advantage of a 25GB mailbox while continuing to receive all official University related communications in one convenient mailbox.

The upgrade will begin on Sept. 12th. During the upgrade, you may experience a brief outage(60 seconds to 60 minutes). All mail will be delivered, even if you temporarily cannot log into your account.

What does this mean to me?

After the upgrade you will have two separate accounts with the same user name and password that you use to access you current SSO email account.

  1. Office 365 account. This account will be your University email account and continue to be administered by UMSL. Technology Support Center can assist you with login issues, reset your password and offer ongoing support.
  2. Personal Microsoft account. Your Skydrive content and other Microsoft services will be contained in a personal account. UMSL will not administer this account and, as a result, cannot reset the password for you. Students whose email accounts are created after Sept. 12th do not automatically have a SkyDrive account. You can create a personal Microsoft account at .

Do I need to do anthing?

A couple steps now may save you some time during the upgrade process.

  1. Make sure your software is up-to-date. Upgrade your Internet Explorer if you are using IE 6 or 7. If you use Outlook to read your email, make sure you are running Office Outlook 2007, 2010, or 2013.
  2. Make it easy to recover your personal Microsoft account password. Add an alternate email address to your Live@edu account before the upgrade if you have not already done so. This will make resetting or recovering your personal Microsoft account password easier after the upgrade. For informaiton on how to add an alternate email address, see .

Will my Forwarding rules and Connected Accounts relationships remain intact after migration?

Microsoft explained that migration does not actually move a user's mailbox or change any of the contents of that mailbox. (ex: Outlook Rules, Connected Accounts, Forwarding, etc.) Metadata is updated that tells the system "this user is part of Office 365".

What are the licensed features of Office 365?

We are migrating to Office 365 for email services only. We are not licensed for Lync, or SharePoint, or any other features of Office 365.

How will I know I have been converted?

The new webmail interface has a simpler theme. Campus logos are no longer supported. The menus along the top will be simplified to "Home" and "Outlook". The interface will look something like this:

Now what?

Continue to log into your email the same way you have. Your email address is the same (SSO and password will remain unchanged. Mail will continue to be delivered even if you do experience a brief outage.
