Configuring Microsoft Outlook for Exchange Mail

If you are a Faculty/Staff member with a Microsoft Exchange email account, we recommend that you use the Microsoft Outlook email client for greatest compatibility and features. This page will assist you in setting up Microsoft Outlook for your Exchange email.

These instructions assume that you already have Outlook properly installed on your computer, and will assist you in configuring Outlook for your Exchange account.

NOTE: These instructions assume that you are either on campus, or connected to the UMSL VPN.

Windows XP (Outlook 2007)

  1. Open Outlook and a New Profile window will open type outlook into the window and click ok.
  2. A New window called Add New E-Mail Account will open click next and Outlook will Configure your account for you. Click finish then outlook will take a couple minutes and setup your account for you.

Windows XP (Outlook 2003)

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Mail. The Mail control panel will open.
  3. Click Add to add a new service type in the profile name outlook click ok.
  4. On the E-Mail accounts window select add a new e-mail account click next.
  5. Select the server type and check Microsoft Exchange Server click next.
  6. For the Microsoft Exchange Server, enter stl-mail3.stl.umsl.edu or stl-mail4.stl.umsl.edu (This depends on your last name. If your last name starts with letters A-K, use stl-mail3. If your last name begins with the letters L-Z, use stl-mail4).
  7. For Username, enter your SSO id. (The part before @msx.umsl.edu, often your last name and first initial)
  8. Click Next.
  9. A window will show that you have successfully configured your account. Click Finish.

MacOS 9

Outlook 2001

  1. Click Apple Menu, and then Control Panels.
  2. Open the Outlook Settings control panel.
  3. Click the Show Profiles... button.
  4. Click New to create a new profile.
  5. Type a name for the new profile.
  6. For the Microsoft Exchange server, enter stl-mail2.umsl.edu
  7. Enter your userid for the mailbox name.
  8. Click Next. A dialog box will pop up, indicating that your settings are being tested.
  9. When prompted, click Create Profile.
  10. On the Outlook Settings control panel, click Close.
  11. Start Microsoft Outlook.
  12. Enter your username and password where prompted. Enter umsl-users for the domain.
