What is a SSO/MyGateway ID? Who has them?
The Single Sign On (SSO) project at the University of Missouri - St. Louis is designed to provide faculty, staff and students with a single ID and password to access multiple computing resources on campus. This ID is known as your SSO (or Gateway) ID. This ID exists in Active Directory, MyGateway and the Studentmail system and provides access to services such as email, the online course management system MyGateway, dialup internet access, online Library resources, desktop logins and more.
How do I change my SSO/MyGateway ID password?
To change your SSO/MyGateway ID password visit: http://sso.umsl.edu
What is MyGateway?
MyGateway provides you with access to a course's online resources, as well as many other features such as email, discussion forums, virtual chat, address book, calendar, task list, MyModule's, and a variety of other internet resources.
How do I access my student email?
Student email can be accessed via the studentmail system http://studentmail.umsl.edu or from within MyGateway.
Can I forward my Studentmail to another account?
Yes, you may redirect mail from your Studentmail account to another email account. To forward your email, log onto MyGateway, go to the "Students" tab under "My Academic Toolbox," click on the "My E-Mail Forwarding Address" link and follow the directions provided. Please note that the university cannot guarantee the security or reliability of your receiving mail at any other email account. This change will only affect new mail received in your Studentmail account. Any existing (old) mail in your account WILL NOT be forwarded for you.

What is File Storage Space?
File Storage Space is a personal "virtual drive". File Storage Space is a service that allows you to use your free server space to store your documents. These files can then be accessed from any computer with internet access and a FTP client.

What are the quotas for my Studentmail/File Storage Space account?
The default size for all Studentmail accounts is 50 megabytes. The default size for all File Storage Space accounts is 100 megabytes.
What is the K: Drive on campus lab computers?
When you log in to the Windows computers in the lab and classroom computers the K: drive is automatically mapped. The K: drive is the same networked server space as your File Storage Space account. Any files saved on the K: drive will allow you to access the same files from another networked computer at a later time.

How do I get a UNIX account?
A UNIX account on Admiral is assigned to you when you register for classes at UMSL.
What is Admiral?
Every registered student has an account on the UNIX server, Admiral, with 100MB disk space. Accounts are typically used for certain coursework, such as C/C++/Java programming, or creation/storage of a personal website. Additionally, you may store personal files in your home directory via FTP or File Storage Space.
Where do I go for help outside of the computer labs?

Where do I check my grades?
Log into MyGateway and go to the "Students Tab" and click on the "My Grades and GPA' link in the " My Academic Toolbox" section.

Do the labs and classrooms on campus have the same software?
All the labs and classrooms maintain the same software in all locations.
Are tutors available in the labs?
Yes, tutors vary by semester and are provided by various departments on campus. Typically tutors work out of the SSB 103, SSB 409, 425, and 452 computer labs. Check with your course instructor for tutor hours that are available or call the main computer lab at 314-516-6061.
Are there any free basic computer classes available?
Yes, the Instructional Computing labs offer Short Courses every Fall and Spring semester. A list of current courses offered is available on the web: http://www.umsl.edu/technology/instructionalcomputing/labs/shortcourses.html
What kind of help will the consultants in the lab provide?
The Student Consultants in the labs are familiar with the lab's hardware, software and basic computing concepts. You can expect them to help when using Microsoft Office, Internet, FTP, Email, MyGateway, Centra, basic computer operations, and other lab procedures. Consultants will not however do your homework or programming for you, please check with tutors or your instructor for help in completing course assignments.

Is printing free? What are the rules?
Yes. Lab policy requires you to only print 1 copy of your file, and only print 10 pages at a time. If printing PowerPoint please print 6 slides per page. A consultant can assist you with all your printing questions.
Can I bring in special paper to print on?
No. To ensure smooth operation of the printers, only the paper provided by Instructional Computing may be used in the printers.
Is color printing available in the labs?

How can I save my work on computers on campus?
You can save your files a variety of ways in the labs and classrooms. A few options are USB Flash Drives, CD-R/CD-RW disk, File Storage Space, or some labs have floppy drives available.
Note: Floppy drives are being phased out throughout the computer labs and classrooms on campus. We recommend using another file storage option instead of floppy disks.

Is wireless internet available on campus? If so where?
Yes, wireless internet is available across a variety of areas on campus. A full listing of wireless areas on campus is here: http://www.umsl.edu/technology/wireless/
What is required to connect to the wireless network?
You will need a laptop with a wireless network adapter that supports the 802.11b and/or 802.11g standards. If your laptop does not have built-in wireless, you may purchase a PC card from the University Bookstore or an electronics retail store.
Cisco VPN Client
UM-St. Louis provides the Cisco VPN Client, which is required for network access. This software solution provides greater security in authentication and data transfer as compared to ordinary wireless networks. Please visit the TSC website and click on "Getting Connected" for more information.
SSO (Gateway) ID
You will need to use your SSO (Gateway) ID to download and use the Cisco VPN software that connects you to the wireless network. Look up your ID at http://sso.umsl.edu

What is Spyware?
Spyware is any program designed to collect information about you and your web practices. Many are unaware that their computers are infected with Spyware agents that have secretly installed themselves onto their hard drives. These agents have been created for a number of reasons. Some are for advertising purposes, telling marketers what users search for, what they download, what sites they visit etc., in order to send them pop-up advertisements that cater to their individual interests.

What is a virus/worm?
A virus is a piece of computer code that attaches itself to a program or file so it can spread from computer to computer, infecting as it travels. Viruses can damage your software, your files and your computer.
A worm, like a virus, is designed to copy itself from one computer to another, but it does so by taking control of your computer and using it to send out infected files and information. Also, worms can allow someone else to take control of your computer remotely.
What should I use to get rid of Spy-ware on my home computer?
A variety of programs allow you to remove adware/spyware. Download the PC Maintenance Guide and follow the instructions.
How do I scan for viruses on my home computer?
Information Technology Services provides Symantec Anti-Virus at no cost to you to protect your computer on the network. You can access and download this software at:

Once you have downloaded and installed Symantec Anti-Virus, the program can scan your system for infections and make recommendations on dealing with each infection.
