Network Access Control

Dear Colleagues,

To further enhance the security of the UMSL network, ITS is embarking on the next phase of a Network Access Control (NAC) system. This system registers a user’s machine on the network and helps to ensure that only authorized machines connect to our network. The process also ensures that systems are patched and protected.

Windows Based Systems: Starting Thursday June 19, 2008, we will be deploying a “NAC Persistent Agent” to all Windows based systems in the domain. The Agent communicates with UMSL’s NAC server and tells us if it needs security updates.  After it is installed, you will see an icon in the system tray (you may see 2 icons until the system restarts).

To get this Agent, we ask that you restart your system on or soon after June 19th.  If you do not see the agent, you might try restarting your system again. The agent is installed automatically on your system.

During install, you may be prompted with a security box that asks for your user id and password. Please enter your SSO ID (also known as your MyGateway ID, or your email ID) and Password at that time.

If you would prefer to install it yourself, please go to www.umsl.edu/technology/itsecurity/nac.html and follow the instructions. That web page also has further information.

Non-Windows Systems: If you have a non-windows systems, such as Apple (iMac, iBook, Macbook, etc), Linux, Unix or other devices, you must register the system on the network yourself.  We do not have an automated way to install the Agent. Please go to www.umsl.edu/technology/itsecurity/nac.html and follow the instructions.

IMPORTANT:  All systems must be registered by Wednesday July 9, 2008. Failing to register your system by this date will result in interruptions in your ability to obtain network resources, including “Steamboat”or “My Documents,” email, Internet, etc.

If your system is not registered by July 9th, you will be redirected to a registration page when you open a web browser. You will not be able to retrieve email or your documents until you first open a web browser and register.

More information can be found at www.umsl.edu/technology/itsecurity/nac.html

If you have more questions please email network_registration@umsl.edu or the Technology Support Center at helpdesk@umsl.edu.

Thank you for your help in keeping our network secure.

...Jim

P2P and Ruckus: In the effort to secure our network and comply with copyright laws, Peer-to-Peer connections are blocked on the campus residential network. The university has a contractual arrangement with Ruckus, which is a service that is available to students for downloading Free and Legal music and videos.  Faculty/Staff may also use this service by paying a monthly subscription fee.

This service has been contracted by the University of Missouri and is available to students on all UM systems campuses. For support of this service, all inquiries should be directed to the Ruckus website to answer your questions. You may also go to: Knowledge@UMSL and type the word Ruckus to get more information about Ruckus on this Campus.
