Student DFS Migration Information

ITS will be migrating/moving student data currently being stored on Admiral to a new file system known commonly as DFS.  DFS is a Microsoft Distributed File System that we expect to provide a reliable and scalable solution for network file storage.

The first initial migration task will be completely transparent to you and will cause no impact or disruption of service to your files.  During this stage, we will simply be copying student data to the new file system.  Files that are held open by particular applications or in use will be skipped over during the initial phase of migration.  The initial phase is scheduled to begin on Friday, November 21, 2008.

Once the initial phase is complete, several incremental or follow-up migration tasks will follow in an effort to migrate the files that were skipped during the initial phase.  The incremental phase is expected to begin on Saturday, November 22, 2008, and be completed by Monday, November 24, 2008.  As with the initial phase, this process will pose no disruption of service.

The final phase of migration will be scheduled to migrate any remaining files and updates to any files that have previously been migrated.  During this phase we will need to ensure that all files are closed and in state in which they can be successfully migrated.  We expect to plan this task to occur during off-peak hours so as to cause the least amount of disruption as possible, but it will be necessary to have everyone off of Admiral at that time.  This is scheduled to occur on the evening of Tuesday, November 25, 2008 and last approximately 3 to 4 hours.

Once the final migration occurs students will begin accessing files through a different path.  Most of these changes will be transparent in that we will manage system drive mappings to your K: drives centrally when logging into a campus managed system.  However, if you access your files by typing in a UNC path or mapping your own drives, you will need to modify those paths.

We will request that any issues or problems experienced be reported by contacting the TSC at X6034 to assist us with tracking any trends and identifying areas where we may need to build additional knowledgebase or FAQ documents to assist our user community with future migrations.

We have attached a PDF with information regarding DFS and additional information regarding access to your files.  Please click here to access this document: http://www.umsl.edu/technology/dfs_student_info.pdf  You will need Adobe Acrobat to open this document.
