Instructional Computing

Info For New Students

Information for students regarding technology available to them is located in the
Online Student Technology Guide

FIRST THINGS FIRST

Get your SSO (Gateway) ID. Once you have your SSO ID and create a password, you can send and receive email, log into Instructional Computing Lab & Classroom computers, and access your course material on the web via MyGateway.

Your email address will be: gatwayid@studentmail.umsl.edu, where "gatewayid" is your Gateway ID. Learn how to access your email.

Be sure to carry your student ID with you at all times.

Say goodbye to floppy disks and use your UNIX shell account, to store your documents, files, etc. on the server. You can then access them from any machine on campus, as well as from home when your connected to the internet.   A USB Thumb drive is another easy way to save your files and transport them from various locations.  Floppy drives are being phased out across the Instructional Computing labs and classrooms.

SSO ID (Gateway ID)
Unique ID given to all new students enrolled after January 2000. The SSO ID is used to access most of the campus computing resources. Your SSO ID and password are used for logging into the MyGateway system, accessing your email, and logging into the computers on campus.

MyGateway
mygateway.umsl.edu is the online course management system here at the University. Login using your Gateway ID and password to access a variety of course information, organizations, and links to other services at the University.  Many instructors use the system to distribute online course materials. The system is accessible from anywhere with an internet connection and a version 4.0 browser or higher.

Studentmail
Studentmail is designed for the distribution of UM-St. Louis official email.

All students currently registered for on-campus classes have a Studentmail account.

  1. For newly enrolled students, most accounts will not be active until the first day of classes.
  2. Your username for Studentmail is your Gateway ID.
  3. Your password for Studentmail is your Gateway ID password.

The easiest way to check your Studentmail account is to go to http://studentmail.umsl.edu/ from virtually any computer with Web access. You can look at a video tutorial of using the web client for Studentmail by clicking here.

  1. Your username and password correspond to your Gateway ID username and password.
  2. Your email address will be gatewayid@studentmail.umsl.edu, using your own Gateway ID.
  3. You will need to obtain and activate your Gateway ID and password to access your accounts and log into studentmail. To do so you must visit http://gatewayid.umsl.edu and click Activate Your Account.

SAMBA (Unix Account)
Each student has a UNIX shell account with 100MB of space that will be mapped for you when you log into any Instructional Computing Lab & Classroom Windows Station. You can also "map" your account from within Windows or Macintosh in any lab or classroom. In Windows the application to do so is under the "Internet" program group off the start menu and is called: "SAMBA". On the Macintosh systems SAMBA is locked in the dock on the bottom of the desktop.

You will be prompted for your UNIX id and password. Click "connect" and the system will map the drive to your computer. Once mapped, you can open Word documents and other files, directly from your UNIX account.

By using Samba to map your account space, you can STOP carrying storage media around! And, if you dial-up to UM-St. Louis, then you can access these files from home using an FTP client. If you use another service provider to connect to the internet you can make use of the UMSL VPN Client.

Internet Browser and plug-ins
Once connected, you will need a web browser, Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or others (like Opera, Netscape) will work just fine. Faculty here at the University post material in various formats, so it’s likely you’ll need to get some browser plug-ins. Click here for a list of recommended plug-ins for use with MyGateway.
