Faculty/Staff DFS Migration Information
ITS will be migrating/moving data currently being stored on Steamboat and Admiral to a new file system known commonly as DFS. DFS is a Microsoft Distributed File System that we expect to provide a reliable and scalable solution for network file storage.
The first initial migration task will be completely transparent to you and will cause no impact or disruption of service to your files. During this stage, we will simply be copying your data to the new file system. Files that are held open by particular applications will be skipped over during the initial phase of migration. The initial phase is scheduled to begin on Friday, December 12, 2008.
Once the initial phase is complete, several incremental or follow-up migration tasks will follow in an effort to migrate the files that were skipped during the initial phase. The incremental phase is expected to begin on Monday, December 15, 2008, and be completed by Wednesday, December 24, 2008. As with the initial phase, this process will pose no disruption of service.
Finally, the final phase of migration will be scheduled to migrate any remaining files and updates to any files that have previously been migrated. During this phase we will need to ensure that all files are closed and in state in which they can be successfully migrated. We expect to plan this task to occur during off-peak hours so as to cause the least amount of disruption as possible, but it will be necessary to have everyone off of Steamboat and Admiral at that time. We plan to complete this process over the holiday break beginning the morning of Friday, December 26, 2008, and continue until complete. We expect to complete this process by Monday, December 29, 2008.
Once the final migration occurs you will begin accessing your files through a different path than you are today. Most of these changes should be fairly transparent in that we will manage system drive mappings to departmental shares and MyDocument redirection centrally. We will provide you with the updated paths and any additional instruction or information you may require prior to final migration.
We have attached a PDF with information regarding DFS and additional information regarding access to your files. Please click here to access this document: http://www.umsl.edu/technology/instructionalcomputing/docs/Fac_Staff_DFS_Info.pdf You will need Adobe Acrobat to open this document.
We also have attached a matrix providing the new locations for all shared department drives. Please click here to access this document: http://www.umsl.edu/technology/DeptShareLocations.xlsx You will need Microsoft Excel to open this document.
We have also provided an updated version of the UMSL Samba client for Mac users. Please click here to access this client: http://www.umsl.edu/technology/UMSL_Samba_Mac.zip
If you have any questions or concerns during this process, please do not hesitate to contact the Technology Support Center X6034.
