NVU Menu Options
Nvu is essentially a WYSIWYG program that embeds HTML code as you
create your website. Below is a description for the icons typically used to create your
website.

New
This function in Nvu allows you to start a new web page.
To create a new document:
Choose file, new.
You may also choose new by clicking on the first icon on your toolbar.
Open
This function in Nvu allows you to open file/s.
To open an existing document:
Choose file, open file.
Under the "look in" option choose the drive your file is located in.
Select the file, make sure the files of type is correct i.e. if it is
an html file make sure it says HTML files and select open.
You may also choose open by clicking on the second icon on your toolbar.
Save
To save an existing document:
Choose file, save. To save a new document:
Choose file save as, choose where to save your document: i.e. desktop
or a:/drive, name your
document and click on save.
When you save in Nvu for the first time, you will be prompted to choose
a title for your website.
You can also choose save from your toolbar.
Publish
This function allows you to publish your page on the web. To get to the
publish option go to:
File, publish, enter the site name which can simply be the name of your
website.
Enter the website information which is the url address for your site.
i.e http://www.umsl.edu is the url address for UMSL's homepage.
Enter the publishing server information next. This is the remote
location where the files for your site will be stored. You may need to contact the system administrator for
this information.
Browse
This function allows you to view your web page using one of the web
browsers, i.e Internet Explorer To preview your page:
Choose file, browse page. Save changes if you have not done so at this
point and
choose launch application.The browse button can also be selected from the menu bar.
Anchor
Also referred to as named anchor. This
function allows you to create a link within the same page, for
example an anchor allows the reader to jump from one section to another
in the same document.
To create an anchor within the same document:
Click the insertion at the beginning of the text where you want to
create the anchor, or select some text.
Choose insert, named anchor or choose the anchor button on the menu bar.
Type a name for the anchor.
Click ok. An anchor icon appears.
Next select the text or image you want to link to the anchor.
Choose insert link or choose the link button on the menu bar.
Select the name for the anchor under the link location.
Click ok.
Link
You can link to local files on your disk, desktop etc. or you can link
to a location on the Internet.
A link needs two items:
- The name/path or address of the file you are linking to: Uniform Resource Locator.
- The selected text/phrase you will click on to jump to the target.
To create a link:
Select the text/phrase that will become your hotspot.
Choose insert link, or the link icon on the toolbar.
Under link location: enter a url location i.e.
http://www.umsl.edu or choose file from your disk, desktop etc.
Click ok.
Image
You can choose an image from a file or you can choose an image by
entering the url location.
To choose an image from a file, click on the image icon, choose file,
select the appropriate drive,
highlight the name of the file and click ok.
To choose an image from a url location:
Open up a browser and enter the url.
Right click on the picture you want to place into Nvu.
Choose save picture as and save in same location as other files that
make up your website.
Choose the image icon.
For image location choose file, find location where you have stored the
picture.
Choose open, click okay.
If you do not want to add alternate
text to the image select this option.
Please be aware of image file sizes and know copyright laws before you
proceed.
*There are a number of other ways to copy an image over as well
Table
Tables are a useful way to organize your website. To create a table:
Choose table from the toolbar.
Select the
tab “quickly” if you are comfortable using the mouse to
select the number of
rows/columns for your table.
Select the tab
“precisely” if you would like to manually enter the number
of rows/columns for
your table.
Choose number of rows, columns.
A border is included by default, however, put 0 in the box if you do
not want the border to
appear.
Cell padding- space between the cell border and cell contents.
Cell spacing- number of spaces between cells in a table.
You can also adjust the location of your table i.e. left, center or
right.
Form
A form is simply an
area that can contain form fields.
Form fields are objects that allow the
visitor to enter information - for example text boxes, drop-down menus
or radio buttons.
When the visitor clicks a submit
button, the content of the form is usually sent to a program that runs
on the server.
Choose form from the menu bar or go to insert, form.
Spell
Checks the accuracy of the document in terms of misspelled words.
Choose this option from the toolbar or go to edit, check spelling.
Print
To choose this option:
File, print or choose the print icon from the toolbar.
If you have more than one option for a printer choose the desired
location. This is where you can adjust the print orientation etc.
Paragraph Format
Allows you to format your website using different styles
Body Text: Applies the application default font and style for regular text, without affecting the spacing before or after the text.
Paragraph: Inserts a paragraph tag (use this to begin a new paragraph). The paragraph includes top and bottom margins.
Heading 1 - Heading 6: Formats the paragraph as a heading. Heading 1 is the highest-level heading, while Heading 6 is the lowest-level heading.
Address: Can be used for a web page "signature" that indicates the author of the page and the person to contact for more information, for example: contact@user.com
Preformat: This is useful for elements such as code examples, column data, and mail messages that you want displayed in a fixed-width font. In normal text, most browsers remove extra spaces, tabs, and paragraph returns. However, text that uses the Preformatted style is displayed with the white space intact, preserving the layout of the original text.
Choose any of the formatting styles above by clicking on the first icon, second row and
selecting your style or go to format paragraph.
Font
Choose from a variety of different font styles i.e. Arial and Times New
Roman to design your website.
This option is the second icon,
second row on the menu bar or go to format, font.
Color for text
Allows you to set text color for web pages.
Click on the third icon, second row or go to format text color.
Highlight color for text
Another option to format the color of your text; 4th icon, second row.
Small font size
Allows you to decrease the size of your font i.e 12 pt. to 10pt.
Choose this option from the menu bar. Icon is the letter A with
the arrow pointing downwards.
Large font size
Allows you to increase the size of your font i.e. 10 pt. to 12 pt.
Choose this option from the menu bar. Icon is the letter A with the
arrow pointing upwards.
Bold, Italics and Underline
These are physical styles within your document. You simply select the
text/phrase and choose one of the styles from the toolbar. You
can also remove the styles you have created by selecting the
text/phrase with the style and clicking on the style again to
remove. For example to bold the word fun, highlight fun
and choose the "B" from the toolbar. To unbold the word fun, highlight the
word again and choose the "B" from the toolbar.
Lists:
Ordered lists- Nvu defaults the ordered lists to appear as numbers.
Used to create a sequence.
- Red
- Blue
- Green
Unordered lists- Nvu defaults the unordered lists to appear as bullets. Used to show no special sequence or order. For example:
- Red
- Blue
- Green
Ordered and unordered lists can also be removed by highlighting the
text and selecting the icon for
bullets or numbered lists from the toolbar.
Alignments
Align left
Align center
Align right
Align justified
These styles position the location of your text.
Indent text
Moves your text to the right five spaces. Works as a tab function.
Outdent text
Moves your text to the left five spaces. Works as a tab function.
