D5: Checklist for Chat Sessions

 

  • Keep group size small to make chat sessions manageable.
  • Schedule multiple chat sessions to facilitate small group size and to accommodate learners in different time zones.
  • Use chat activities to review course concepts or for brainstorming sessions.
  • Invite an expert to be a guest participant in a chat session.
  • Use chat sessions in combination with other instructional activities.
  • (Instructors) Be prepared to serve as a moderator and facilitator of the chat discussion.
  • Develop and clearly communicate the ground rules for the chat sessions.
  • Use communication protocols to increase efficiency.
  • Use behavioral guidelines for the participants to maintain orderly conduct.
  • Trade ideas with experienced instructors who use chat sessions in their courses.
  • Design chat activities that will be fun for the learners and for the instructor.
