Rudd: I don't know that initially you can say, "Boy, this new
technology or this new technique will absolutely hit it." Some of it is
trial and error. I've taught several distance education courses, and some
things work well, and other things haven't. I think I have a better feel for
what does work now: keeping things in shorter segments, making sure things are
clear, and having assignments that are easy to understand, which means that on
the front-end, you really need to describe what you expect of the students.
Some things that haven't hit the mark in my distance education
experience, some of the chat room functions don't work all the time. So sometimes technology lets you down. Sometimes it works
really well. Sometimes it doesn't. So you've got to learn to be flexible there.
