NOTE: In 2008 Missouri was tied for 33rd with Texas among the states for the percentage of women in the state legislature, the second lowest among surrounding states. Illinois ranked 18th, Iowa 26th, Nebraska 37th, Kansas 14th, and Arkansas 29th. Vermont ranked first with 37.8%, while South Carolina was last with 8.8%.
