History

In 1992, ZTA adopted The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation as its national philanthropy.

Later, the Fraternity broadened its focus to encompass not only the Komen Foundation, but also other educational means dedicated to fighting breast cancer through education, awareness and promoting breast health. Furthermore, each alumnae and collegiate chapter generally volunteers with one or more local philanthropy of its choosing in addition to their support of the Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation and ZTA's national philanthropy.

Today, our National Philanthropy is Breast Cancer Education and Awareness.

THINK-PINK!® is a registered trademark of ZTA, and it is used to promote our breast cancer education and awareness projects.

We distribute THINK-PINK!® ribbons attached to information cards conveying the message of early detection as the key to survival and a greater quality of life.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Each October, we are involved in several projects to promote breast cancer awareness:

  • We tie pink ribbons around trees on campus as a reminder for the month of October
  • For 5 years, a Think-Pink Lip-Sync contest was held on campus. Individuals or groups would perform in the student center to a song of their choice to compete for the title of Lip-Sync champion.
  • In 2006, in lieu of the Lip-Sync contest, a yogurt eating competition was held in the student center. Yoplait yogurt was used in the competition; the pink lids were saved and donated to Yoplait as part of their "Save Lids to Save Lives" program
  • In 2006, pink T-Shirts with the phrase "Real Men Wear Pink" or "Real Women Wear Pink" were sold on campus to raise money to benefit breast cancer awareness and education.
  • ZTA partners with the NFL to distribute THINK-PINK!® cards at a designated football game

THINK-PINK!® with the NFL

Our chapter, along with the local St. Louis Alumnae Chapter and other nearby collegiate chapters, distribute THINK-PINK!® ribbons and information cards to NFL fans at a St. Louis Rams game in October.

This year, we were joined by sisters from the Alpha Psi chapter (University of Missouri - Columbia) and the Eta Phi chapter (Illinois State University).

Yoplait...

Thinking pink means more green for the Susan G. Komen Foundation and the ZTA Foundation!

ZTA collegiate and alumnae chapters collect pink Yoplait yogurt lids. For each pink lid collected, Yoplait will donate 10 cents to the Susan G. Komen Foundation AND an additional 5 cents to the ZTA Foundation, up to 300,000 lids!

Zeta Tau Alpha received "Best Campaign in Support of an Outside Philanthropy" for its ZTA and Yoplait THINK-PINK!® to Save Lids to Save Lives program from the North American Interfraternity Conference. In 2005, during the first week of the Yoplait lid collection, over half of the lids collected nationally were from Zetas!

All ZTA collegiate and alumnae chapters received customized ZTA Save Lids to Save Lives® Yoplait lid collection kits, including co-branded table tents, posters, banners, collection bins, counter cards and t-shirts all featuring the ZTA and Yoplait logos!

Komen For The Cure

ZTA began its association with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in 1992 when it became the first National Sponsor of the Race for the Cure’s® National Breast Cancer Survivor Recognition Program. ZTA provides the signature pink T-Shirts and caps for the Survivors as well as the "In Celebration Of" and "In Memory Of" back signs for participants to wear during the race.

We work as volunteers for the St Louis Alumnae Chapter, who coordinates the St Louis Komen Race for the Cure's® Survivor Pavilion and Recognition program.
