The Office of Student Life & Development offers a variety of programs, services, and resources for students to connect with one another and become involved in the learning that takes place outside of the classroom. The Student Life staff members help students find their perfect fit no matter their years of experience, leadership abilities, or available free-time. Our programs and services are responsive to student and student organization needs, and we are able to customize activities, training, or presentations upon request. Whether it's participating in the Emerging Leaders program, checking out materials from one of the resource centers, attending the Fall Workshop, or joining one of our 120+ student organizations, the Office of Student Life encourages every student to engage and be active in the campus community.
Resource Centers
Black Culture Room. In the early 1970's, a Black Culture Room was established on the campus of the University of Missouri-St. Louis. While subsequent decades witnessed a variety of transformations, in 2007 efforts to revitalize and reshape this room have culminated in the creation of a Black Culture Room which will embody the sprit of Black, African American, and African descent culture at our University. With a rich history of Black and African American culture and Civil Rights interwoven into the fabric of our campus community, the renewed Black Culture Room pays tribute the achievements and victories of the past, present, and future. Selected readings and works of art are displayed in this Room, while rotating displays of additional art and culture contributions are showcased periodically.
GLBT & Allies Resource Center. In order to serve the needs of a borad gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and allies community on the campus of the University of Missouri-St. Louis, the GLBT & Allies Resource Center was formally established in 2005. In conjunction with other campus entitities including the Campus Safet Zone Project and PRIZM, the UM-St. Louis GLBT Student Alliance, the Center promotes a positive learning environment for all students. The Center further fosters a cosmopolitan milieu which is open, accepting, and affirming of the diversity inherent in a large, urban campus of the twenty-first century. While the focus of this Center remains foremost on the needs of sexual minorities and their allies, the Center strives to promote holistic multicultural sensitivity, and to affirm the dignity and worth of all members of the campus community.
Men's Resource Center. The Men's Resource Center serves to bring progressive men's programming to campus, in order to educate all members of the community about the changing realities of men's experience within our society. Through poster displays, ad campaigns, and a collection of readings, resources, and referrals, the Center offers men on campus an opportunity to learn more about the many possibilities which are now a part of our modern world.
Women's Resource Center. The Women's Resource Center was established in 2005 to serve as a cultural and educational resource for the University of Missouri-St. Louis campus community. In conjunction with other campus entities, the Center promotes a positive learning environment for all students. The Center is dedicated to bringing attention to social, political, and cultural issues of particular relevance to women. The Center also focuses on issues of gender and culturally constructed gender roles, and provides resources and referrals to those ingaged in scholarly or secular research. By providing a visible presence for women and their male allies, and through showcasing programming intended to highlight women's issues, the Women's Resource Center helps to foster a cosmopolitan milieu which is conducive to the educational mission of the University, and which actively contributes to equality for women.
