The University of Missouri-St. Louis Athletic Department sponsors 11 varsity sports that compete at the NCAA Division II level, including baseball, men's basketball, women's basketball, men's golf, women's golf, men's soccer, women's soccer, softball, men's tennis, women's tennis and women's volleyball. UMSL is a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Once known as the Rivermen and Riverwomen, UMSL changed it's name tot he Tritons in August of 2007.

Throughout its history, UMSL has had 100 student-athletes receive All-American honors and has had 46 different teams advance to the NCAA National Tournament, including the 1973 men's soccer team that won the NCAA National Championship. UMSL has won five conference championships in its history, including most recently the baseball team during the 2003 season. More than 400 student-athletes have earned all-conference honors, while 395 student-athletes have received Academic All-American honors. Additionally, UMSL has had four student-athletes earn GLVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors.

During the 2007-08 season, UMSL's volleyball and women's soccer teams were named recipients of the GLVC Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Sportsmanship Awards for the fall season.

In 2001, the UMSL Athletic Department started the UMSL Sports Hall of Fame, which currently has a total of 53 inductees. More information about the Athletic department can be found online at www.umsltritons.com.
