The Pierre Laclede Honors College is open to qualified and
motivated students in every undergraduate major. Honors students
meet most of their general education requirements through
the Honors program, and Honors courses are taught in interactive
seminars limited to 15 students. University faculty volunteers join
each year with the Honors College's own faculty to offer a wide and
attractive choice of courses. Sample seminar titles from recent
years include “primate behavior”, “Plato's Republic", “inventing America”,
"bad science", "advanced leadership skills", “cyberculture”, and “existential psychology.” Honors
students also undertake independent study projects, which can include research in their major fields as well as
internships and directed readings. All students participate in the Honors
College Writing Program, and this participation can be extended to take
dedicated writing courses (e.g. "nature writing", "satire", "writers and the
writing process") or even the seminar which annually produces the Honors
literary magazine, "Bellerive".
Honors College students, faculty, and staff constitute a community
of scholars committed to active learning and personal development. The College offers
a four-year program for first-time freshmen, but there is a two-year program
for students wishing to transfer in (from other colleges or from UMSL). All
share the educational and social advantages of Honors study, and all Honors
students in good standing receive renewable scholarships. Most are merit
scholarships, but a few needs scholarships are available and there are
annual award scholarships for distinguished academic performance. There are
special purpose scholarships for students already enrolled in the Honors
College, for instance to support supervised research projects or to subsidize
travel expenses for exchange study.
Advising: Each Honors College student is advised by an Honors
faculty member, who assists in planning the student's Honors College career.
Honors faculty advisors also offer counsel on non-honors courses, but students--
especially Juniors and Seniors--are urged to seek advice from their major
departments or colleges. The capstone Honors 4100 ("Portfolio Writing"), taken as
a one-credit course in the senior year, includes support for students' job and
graduate school applications.
Admissions: UM-St. Louis students wishing to apply for transfer
admission to Honors should contact the college's admissions office at (314)516-7769
or (314)516-6870. Walk-ins are welcome, and interested students may also attend
Honors College Open House days, which occur throughout the year.
