Accidents do happen when we least expect them. If you have a permanent disabling condition or find yourself with a temporary disabling situation due to an accident or illness, you may require special classroom accommodations or services.

Disability Access Services provides information, guidance, special accommodations, and services to students with disabilities. Assistance in providing for the accessibility needs of students with both permanent and temporary disabilities is available through this office. The office is equipped with a text telephone (TT) for the hearing impaired. Additional special adaptive computer equipment items and software for students with disabilities are available in this office.

Other auxiliary aids and services may be provided to qualified students with disabilities. For additional information on auxiliary aids for students with disabilities, please refer to the policies and procedures section of this guide.

Since 1997 the Student Support Services program at UM-St. Louis has been providing academic support (in addition to already provided classroom accommodations) to a limited number of new, transfer or continuing undergraduate students with disabilities. As part of the federally funded TRIO programs, SSS is designed to assist students successfully pursue a college education and graduate with a bachelor's degree. Services are discussed one-on-one with program staff and implemented with each student's needs in mind. Nowhere else on campus are students with disabilities able to find such personalized and supportive services uniquely designed especially for them.

What is TRIO? The name TRIO refers to programs funded by the U.S. Department of Education designed to assist disadvantaged students successfully pursue a college education. TRIO programs include: Upward Bound, Talent Search, Student Support Services, Educational Outreach Centers, and McNair Acheivement. Today there are now more than 2700 TRIO programs assisting nearly 866,000 students at over 1000 colleges and universities. You may visit their website at http://www.coenet.us.
