DETAILS
Hyman Bass is an award-winning mathematician, who is perhaps best known for his work in algebra. He was named the 2006 National Medal of Science laureate in the field of mathematical and computer science. His research interests include algebraic K-theory, number theory, group theory (geometric methods), algebraic geometry, mathematical knowledge for teaching, the education and development of mathematics teachers and mathematical reasoning in elementary classrooms.

Bass' lecture is the 11th annual Spencer & Spencer Systems Math and Computer Science Lecture. UMSL alumnus Robert Spencer funds the lecture.

Bass will discuss why he believes teacher capacity and teaching quality are both key to the improvement of mathematics education. He also will analyze what could make a difference in their effectiveness.
