DETAILS
English Baroque composer Henry Purcell's three-act opera "Dido and Aeneas" is a tragic love story. Composed in 1689, the opera tells the story of Dido, the queen of Carthage, who falls in love with Aeneas, who is shipwrecked in Carthage after defeat in the Trojan War. Despite Aeneas' mutual feelings for Dido, he ultimately chooses to follow his destiny of establishing the Roman Empire. Abandoned, Dido is heartbroken and kills herself.

Stella Markou, director of vocal studies at UMSL, will direct "Dido and Aeneas." The opera will feature performances by UMSL music students, a quintet of dancers, a string quartet and a lutenist. Jim Richards, chair of the Department of Music at UMSL, will conduct the orchestra.
