Test Collection Access Policy

Educational and psychological testing - the use of standardized and non-standardized tests to measure or assess particular individual characteristics or assess academic or clinical issues - is a very important part of education and psychology, as well as other fields. The Ward E.Barnes Library maintains an extensive collection of tests such as the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Strong Interest Inventory, and Wechsler Individual Achievement Test.

The Ward E. Barnes Library Test Collection Access Policy states:
"Materials will only be released to students who need them to meet course requirements, and upon prior written approval of the appropriate faculty member. Each semester, the faculty member must provide the Ward E. Barnes Library with a printed listing indicating the course name, course number, student name, and student number for all students enrolled in the class. Students requesting use of the Test Collection materials may be denied access if their name and student number have not been provided to the Barnes Library for the appropriate course.”

A valid UM-St. Louis ID is required for checkout of all testing materials. One test per patron may be checked out at a time, for two hours at a time. These materials are for LIBRARY USE ONLY and may not be removed from the building. PHOTOCOPYING of the tests, including booklets, manuals, answer keys, and administrative materials is NOT ALLOWED and VIOLATES COPYRIGHT LAW.

Guidelines on test use, protection of materials, and other issues can be found in Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing, (APA; AERA, 1999) from the American Psychological Association and the American Educational Research Association and are provided below:

Access to psychological test materials (test booklets, protocols, administration materials, scoring keys and manuals) should be granted only to qualified psychologists or other professionals who use the material in their research or clinical practice. Students who use the materials in the course of their research or clinical practice or as learners should be directly supervised by a psychologist or other appropriate supervisors. For example, when testing materials are stored in a library, access must be limited to appropriate personnel and to students in training, only with the permission of the appropriate faculty member. Test materials sold for the purposes of student training must not be available to the casual purchaser in college and university bookstores. (APA, AERA, 1999)

Safety of the materials, copyright law, and the preservation of technical data (norms, validity, reliability) are the major reasons behind these substantial limitations.
