Provincial House Chapel

The UM-St. Louis Provincial House Chapel and facilities offer excellent locations for your wedding, rehearsal dinner and/or showers. Our staff looks forward to working with you and answering any questions you may have. It is our goal to do our best to help make your wedding festivities as enjoyable and worry free as possible. Please do not hesitate to contact us whenever we may be of assistance to you.

You are invited to visit any of our facilities prior to or after reserving the space. To schedule an appointment for a site visit, please call Conference and Event Services at 314.516.4399. Our office hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. After hours and weekend appointments are available by prior arrangement.

Provincial House Chapel

The Provincial House Chapel is located off Natural Bridge Road on the University’s South Campus. Completed in 1916, the Provincial House Chapel’s Norman Gothic design features a magnificent hammerbeam ceiling which rises high in arches and vaults, white marble flooring, towering windows, and seating for 350 guests. This chapel provides a striking setting for more formal weddings.

Facility Use Fees

Fees include the use of the facility for two hours for a rehearsal, four hours for your ceremony, a staff member on site during your wedding and the facility set-up. Fees for the chapels also include two dressing areas, and microphone(s) and sound system. Additional fees may be incurred for special requests.

Rehearsal Dinners: If the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner are both in these facilities, the total time available for both events is five hours. The five hours include the rehearsal, the dinner and all set up and clean up for both events. Tables and chairs will be provided and you are responsible for arranging them as you prefer.

All food and/or beverages must be purchased through the University’s contracted food service vendor.  The Catering Office can be contacted at (314)516-4321. Food Service must serve all alcohol beverages. You may purchase your wedding cake through any source you wish.

Event Insurance

All individuals and/or groups renting space for an event at the University must obtain Commercial General Liability Insurance. You have two choices for obtaining the insurance. You may provide your own insurance, or you may purchase the insurance through the University. Further information regarding the insurance will be provided with your wedding confirmation.

Reservations                                      

  • The reservation process begins by calling 314.516.4399 and confirming the availability of the wedding date you have in mind.
  • If it is available, you (a person from the wedding party) must submit the Wedding/Reception Application online or in person. The name on the application should reflect the happy couple. 
  • Due to the popularity of the chapel, reservations are on a first come first serve basis. Our offices will hold your requested date for 48 hours without the 25% prepayment of the facility fee listed above.
  • Upon our receipt of your application and 25% prepayment of the facility fee, a confirmation package will be mailed to you.
  • If you prefer to view the chapel prior to booking, please make an appointment.

Confirmation packages will include a detailed billing schedule, facilities and services agreement, and other helpful information regarding our facilities and St. Louis vendors.  Since you and your wedding party are our only focus on this special day, it is our policy to limit the number of weddings per day to one, yours!

Cancellation

All cancellations must be in writing.  The effective cancellation date will be the date the written cancellation is received by Residential Life Conference and Event Services. Fees paid will be returned minus the following cancellation charges and any expenses incurred on your behalf.

The Provincial House Chapel has 22 rows of pews on each side of the center aisle with a break in between pews 12 and 14.  Pew decorations (bows, flowers, and tulle) less than 3 pounds can easily be hooked on to the pews by using the 3M Command Hooks we have provided.

The Provincial House Chapel has a 45 feet wide marble floor and a glass enclosure surrounds the sanctuary. 

BulletCenter Aisle

The Provincial House Chapel center aisle is 6 ft. wide and 77 ft. long.  Please keep in mind the Provincial House Chapel floor is marble and some runners may be hazardous.  Your florist may have suggestions on the type of runner that would be most appropriate.

BulletBack of the Chapel

The back of the chapel features three wooden arched doorways, however, only the main doorway has double doors.  Hooks are provided to decorate the inside frame of each of the doorways.

BulletDressing Rooms

Two dressing rooms are available for your wedding party’s use.  The men’s dressing room is located inside the chapel while the bridal room is located just outside the chapel.  It is strongly suggested that the groom and groomsmen come dressed before the wedding. 

BulletSound Systems

For your wedding, there will be one wireless microphone for your officiate and up to three stand microphones provided at no additional charge. Sound needs in addition to these microphones should be requested as early as possible. Requests for additional equipment may result in additional charges. 

The chapel is also equipped with a 5 disk CD player with remote.  If you choose to use the CD player, someone from your wedding party must be designated to operate the CD player.

BulletMusical Instruments

The chapel is equipped with a copper piped organ and a piano.  Both are tuned and available for your use during your rehearsal and wedding.

BulletCeremony Accessories

Freely available are several white Romanesque columns varying in height, candle table, guest book stand, and podium.  For a nominal rental fee, we also provide a unity candle candelabras, four single candelabras, and a pair of 7 light candelabras.  All candelabras are adjustable in height and made of brass to match the chapel's decor.  Additional information and rates are provided in your wedding confirmation packet.

BulletBuilding Policies

  • Alcohol and its consumption are not permitted on the campus.
  • Food and beverages are not permitted in the chapel.
  • Smoking is prohibited inside all buildings.
  • You may have deliveries made during your rehearsal time or the day of your wedding (within your 4 hours).  University staff will not accept or be responsible for deliveries therefore you must have your own representative present to accept deliveries.
  • Trash items (boxes, excess papers, flower debris, or anything you wish to discard) must be placed in or next to the receptacles provided.
  • Any signs or decorations used both on the interior or exterior of the building and along the roadside must be taken down immediately following your event.

BulletDecorating Policies

  • Fresh flower petals, rice, confetti, or similar items may not be dropped, sprinkled, or thrown inside or outside of the chapel. 
  • Bubbles and edible bird seeds are allowed outside the building.
  • No tape, of any kind, is allowed or should be used on any surface inside the chapel.   
  • All flowers & plants must be removed from the facility at the end of the event.  
  • Candles are permitted for decorating, however, only no drip candles are allowed and must be lit with a taper or candle lighter.
  • Candelabras may be used provided drip shields, hurricane glasses, or other protective measures are used.  Other decorations such as candles may be used in the aisle however must be on stands and be protected by hurricane chimneys. 
  • Pew decorations (bows, flowers, and tulle) can easily be hooked and unhooked onto the pews by using the 3M Command Hooks we have provided.
  • Anything you have brought for the wedding, please remember to take with you or discard in a trash can before leaving. Prior to leaving, you should do a quick sweep of all the rooms your wedding party has used.  All rooms, including the chapel, must be cleared out of your belongings.
