The Community and Neighborhood Development unit of PPRC works to develop partnerships with St. Louis area community and neighborhood organizations in order to create "livable communities." The unit is linked to the Urban Neighborhood / University Partnership initiative supported by University Outreach and Extension's Outreach Development Fund. This initiative was created in September 1998 to link university resources with urban neighborhood needs and priorities; to develop mutually respectful research and action partnerships; and to strengthen the capacity of both the university and the community to build flourishing partnerships.
The Community and Neighborhood Development unit operates with the following priorities to connect the university and the St. Louis community and serve Missouri citizens.
- Create opportunities for community leaders,
neighborhood residents and students to strengthen skills and networks
necessary to be full partners in community planning, lead community
building initiatives and assist in creating livable communities.
- Convene key community stakeholders and facilitate
processes that include residents, public agencies, nonprofit organizations
and private institutions to discuss and respond to issues that
are important to communities and the region.
- Provide reliable technical assistance to organizations
and neighborhoods engaged in community building initiatives at
all levels of decision-making.
- Develop, test and share new community building
and community development theories and practices.
- Mobilize collaborations and partnerships with
others in the university and the community who share an interest
in and commitment to community building and advancing goals for
our neighborhoods and the region.
