MISSION
IT Enterprises at the University of Missouri-St. Louis (ITE) is designed to be a major force in translating innovative ideas into thriving businesses in the fields of information technology and life sciences. To succeed in this mission, the enterprise offers state-of-the-art infrastructure and access to the expertise of University faculty and students. In concert with the University of Missouri’s fourth mission, ITE fosters innovation to support knowledge-based economic development.

The 3,000 square foot High Performance Computing (HPC) Center serves as the facility's hub. |
LONG-RANGE STRATEGIC GOALS
ITE works closely with corporate and research entities in the region to accomplish the following in economic development, technology transfer and expanded research and educational opportunities:
- House multiple startup companies formed by entrepreneurs in the high-growth fields of information technology and life sciences, providing necessary facility resources and access to UM-St. Louis faculty and students in all disciplines (e.g., biology, chemistry, physics, computer sciences, business, economics, and beyond) to advance their work.
- Develop new start-up companies from University inventions, which in turn provide high paying job opportunities for UM-St. Louis graduates and others in these fields.
- Provide computing resources and broadband connectivity to tenant companies, academic researchers and industry through a High-Performance Computing (HPC) Center.
- Serve as a cross-discipline research center of excellence supporting all academic and industry researchers requiring high-performance computing.
- Operate as a springboard for major external funding supporting research, technology transfer and economic development.
ACTIVITIES
ITE provides infrastructure and offers services to early-stage, high-growth advanced technology companies. These companies are created by entrepreneurial inventions or those licensed from technology-based corporations or universities. ITE fosters collaborations between tenant companies and faculty/ students who provide solutions to R&D questions and problems. Companies receive assistance in obtaining collaborative grants and contracts with faculty/students from granting agencies and the corporate sector (e.g., STTR). Student intern participation is an important attraction for startups in the form of talented, energetic, cost-efficient human capital to grow their companies. Students benefit from hands-on experience in their fields of study.
In a broader sense, ITE is committed to take a leadership role in expanding the high-wage job market in information technology and life sciences for University graduates and others in the region. In addition, ITE will support material partnerships in technology transfer among university, industry and entrepreneurs.

KEY EXPERTISE
IT Enterprises will be operated by a manager and assisted by a receptionist. The HPC center will be operated by system administrators. University faculty and staff, including computer scientists, information system specialists, bioinformaticists and graduate students, will be available to tenants for consulting on technology-related research problems, helping solve fundamental R&D issues. This is a critical service to startup companies and is designed to go beyond the usual incubator business plan (shared conference and break room space, secretarial staff, etc.).
IT Enterprises will provide R&D solutions to support IT Enterprises’ startup companies, external clients and campus faculty by establishing development platforms and supplying comprehensive solutions on robust and reliable technologies.

SERVICES OFFERED TO TENANTS
At its core, IT Enterprises is a place to house startup companies requiring advanced computing and/or access to broadband. The profile of a startup attracted to this facility is a company that would benefit from its association with university faculty and other startups through collaborative R&D work. In addition, the startup would have access to a steady supply of undergraduate and graduate students as interns and potential employees once they graduated. The HPC center will support the startups, faculty research and collaborative work with technology-based companies engaged in translational research in the St. Louis area.
LIMIT ON TENANCY
There is a finite period of time that a startup will remain in the facilities. A typical tenant is expected to leave the facilities within a five-year period. Request for additional period of residency may be granted on rare occasions with advanced notice and compelling justification.
