To the right is the beginning
of a journal article.
Almost all of the information
needed to build a citation
can be found on these
opening pages.
In most indexes, a citation
begins with the article's
title.
Next, the citation will indicate
authors, if there are even any
listed (and sometimes there
aren't!).
Citations frequently reduce
author first and middle names
to initials in order to
conserve space.
Likewise, the journal's title
MIGHT be abbreviated, some-
times radically so.
Citations also provide a journal's
volume and issue number,
assuming that the journal
even has these.

Next, a citation will need
to indicate the article's
starting page number...
...followed by the ending
page number.

Finally, no citation can be
complete without the article's
date of publication.
As with the journal title, the date
is frequently abbreviated to
conserve space.
So, above we have a complete
and typical citation: article title,
author(s), abbreviated journal
title, volume and issue numbers,
page numbers, and abbreviated date.
