This tutorial is about interpreting journal article citations in print and online indexes. Most indexes have their own citation styles and it is impossible to illustrate all of these. Yet if citations vary from index to index they all share the characteristics of being concise and segmented. Their purpose is to guide one to the location of a written work.

For illustration purposes the tutorial uses its own citation format. The concepts embodied can then be generalized to other citation styles in any number of indexes whether these are in print or online.

The screen resolution needs to be set to a minimum of 1024 x 768 or higher for the tutorial to work. The tutorial also needs as much screen space as possible. In particular, there should be no frames or menus to the left or right of the browser window.
