UMSL Library databases contain many full-text journal articles. An article that is listed - yet that is not available - in one database might actually be in full-text in a different database.
The next few modules will introduce you to ArticleLinker, the service the UMSL Libraries use to help you gain access to articles across databases as quickly, and easily, as possible. |
When a library database displays the record for an article yet does not contain its full-text, you will see something like the following icon nearby: |
Less often, the icon will look like the one below:
|
Or like this:
|
Sometimes, you will just see a link with wording like the following: |
|
Whether you see icons or hot links, if an article is not available in a library database, it might be readily available in another database. The icons or wording below will try to 'link' you to the article. |
Above we see a short list of citations from a database to which the UMSL Libraries subscribe. |
Two of the articles are available in PDF. As you know, when you click any of the PDF icons, you will see the articles appear on the screen. |
However, the very first article is not available in this database, so an |
|
icon makes an appearance. |
Click the ArticleLinker icon to continue. |
Great! When you click the ArticleLinker icon, a pop-up screen will appear in your browser giving you information about how to retrieve the article. |
Notice that the details in the pop-up screen match the article you selected. |
Thus the article title, the author, and the journal title correspond to what is shown on the ArticleLinker pop-up screen.
This is important, since ArticleLinker screens resemble each other even when they deal with different articles. |
An ArticleLinker screen might not always noticeably "pop-up" , even though it is definitely on the screen... |
... the pop-up might be hidden in a tab on your browser.
If you are having trouble finding the correct ArticleLinker screen, check all tabs or open browser windows, or else ask a reference librarian for help. |
We will explore other aspects of ArticleLinker in subsequent modules.
Just remember, clicking will try to help you find the full-text of an article if the text is absent in the database you are currently using. Module 1 finished! |
